2012 UTMB and TWU Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If anyone happens to get one of the second round emails from TWU Houston let us know! I heard they may be sending out more invites!

From what I have heard 25 more will be sent out to the Houston area. My fingers are crossed.

Yes, same for Dallas. Please let us know when you hear from Dallas! Thx 🙂

I applied 4 places: Tech, where I have an interview Nov 17, UTMB where I have finished my interview, TWU Dallas and UTHSC SA. I found out late that I needed one additional Humanities class for UTHSC. They require 2 I guess, vs the others. So, I do not think I will get an interview there. So, I am holding my breath for that TWU email. Actually on paper I would be more competitive at TWU as they base the GPA on last 60 (mine is like 3.9) so I hope I get my e-mail next week as they really are my #1 choice!

I too need an additional class for UTHCSA. You have until the end of the spring semester to finish all prereqs, therefore you still may have a shot. Did they send you a transcript evaluation worksheet? You just need to contact them and let them know you are "intending to enroll" for that class and then register for it. It may be worth a shot.

It is my understanding that you have to finish by the end of the fall semester, not spring. I went to their orientation in 2010 and they stated that. Did it change?

Upon further research, I have just made my self more confused. The official program overview (http://shpwelcome.uthscsa.edu/MasterOT.pdf) states that for the class entering 2012 have until the end of the spring semester 2012, but the class entering 2013 must have them in by fall 2012. Not sure if that is a typo or not...but they may have to follow it since it's printed. I recieved an email with a transcript evaluation form that said I need an additional class, so I just emailed them back and let them know I have just registered and then they sent the evaluation form back that says I "intend to enroll", and that I was good to go. So I guess I am.

To do that would put me at 21 hours next semester, can't do that. They sent me a spreadsheet and that is how I discovered I was short 1 Humanities. Who cares, no one else need that???

Did Dallas and Houston only send 25 first round invites each?
I heard they would interview around 60, and accept around 40......

I believe they sent out 35-37 interview invites. When I spoke to the secretary at TWU Houston she informed me that she was waiting on one more list of recommendations from Denton, but that that list would only contain 25 more candidates for interview recommendations. I heard from another forum member that TWU Houston interviews 60-62 candidates. Nerve wrecking :barf:

I wonder how many applicants they ended up having.

Yes, so nerve wrecking! Especially since they said the emails would go out this week, so they should send them either today or tomorrow. :/ 25 more interview invitations is just NOT enough 🙁

If anyone hears, please post any information.

For my class at TWU Houston they interviewed over 70 and selected 42. If I remember correctly, our interviews were on Dec 3rd and I found out I was accepted on Feb 10th.

Apparently Dallas sent the remainder of the interview invitations, someone posted on the
2012 TWU UTMB UTHSCSA forum that they got an invite today.

Yes, I got an email today around noon for TWU Dallas. But don't know how may others they sent out.

When did you turn in your application?

The due date was October 15th, and I didnt turn in my application till around October 10th. I was on bed rest for pre term labor in the hospital and it really threw me off!! I was glad to just get it in by the due date but Im a little worried that may hurt me 🙁 we shall see!

Hi. I am interviewing on 12-2 at TWU. What is the writing sample like? What are some of the questions they asked you during your interview? Any advice for the interview? I want to make sure I am as prepared as possible. Thanks!

For those still waiting on an invite from TWU-Dallas, I just got confirmation from the secretary that all invites were sent out last week. I was told interview invites were determined strictly by the last 60 hours of your undergrad GPA. There were a high number of qualified applicants and the cutoff was 3.67 this year.

I'm apparently on a waitlist... she said they don't give out your number on the waitlist, and if you are contacted it will likely be next summer. I'm assuming that means you are waitlisted underneath all of the interviewed applicants who won't be selected so chances are extremely slim you will get a call. Just my guess.

Bummer.. Sorry to hear that. That will probably be me also. My last 60 hrs total was 3.45 I think Im screwed.

Yeah, me too. I remember when a 3.45 was something to brag about! I don't know if it's even worth applying next year. My last 60 GPA was 3.53 and if that's all they're looking at for the first cut, no amount of volunteering/shadowing and recommendation letters will seem to help. UGH. Well at least I won't be $80,000 down in student loan debt and constantly worrying about money for the next 2.5 years.👎

I like your optimism. I think basing acceptance primarily off gpa is the reason there are a bunch of healthcare providers in the industry that don't care about the patients. They are there just for a paycheck. I could be totally wrong. Sorry if I sound bitter.

I know it seems like a blow right now but there are other programs. I can't speak for TWU-Dallas, but Houston has had years of complaints. They turn out therapist, sure, but for the time and cost, you would think most would recommend it without reservations and from my inquiries that has not been the case.

IF you didn't make the cut, don't take it personally. Keep your drive and you'll find a place that wants YOU. Also, don't be afraid to call and ask WHY...maybe you won't hear what you want, but it'll help you understand what they look for and that maybe you'll see it's a good thing it didn't work out.

What complaints about Houston? Also what schools are you applying to?

No! You are right on the money! I'm a nurse. I worked nursing for a little over a year and couldn't take it anymore. I was surrounded by miserable, unprofessional co-workers. Why did they become a nurse? A job and paycheck. Why did I become a nurse? I love working with the patients and the families. OT is going to turn into "nursing #2" because of exactly this.

Even when I was completing my observation, one of the OT's was complaining (nice word) about only making $44 an hour. She was lazy. Texting while doing group therapy and not paying attention to her job. No joke! Oh, but I guess her GPA was high enough so who cares if patients are getting legit therapy.

I just found out why I didn't get in to Houston. I'm from New York and New York grades on decimal scale not the letter scale. (2.8 , 3.9, etc) My last 60 GPA is 3.73 but at Texas Womans its only 3.57! I asked why. They said that they only accept letter grades/whole numbers. So I had several 3.8's and 3.9's. Well at TWU, they don't accept that so those 3.9's were rounded down to 3.0!!! Garbage! What they don't understand is that a 3.9 is usually a 93%. What would a 93% be in Texas? Exactly, an A ! They literally stole points from me and caused me not to get an interview.

So don't feel bad because I basically found out tonight that less qualified applicants will get into the program over me. Total garbage. I'm fuming.

Just to reiterate, the first cut for TWU is based on GPA. The interview process is likely a more fair assessment of passion, volunteer experience, etc. They have to figure out some way to get through mountains of applications quickly. Not that I like their chosen method, but I can understand why it's done.

One last vent and then I have a bottle of wine to attend to: All I want to do is help people at something I think I would be really great at! And TWU won't let me pay them thousands of dollars to do it! Wah.

neuroOT83: Dude. I feel for you. That is total BS!!!

It is unethical to down grade someone's earned points. It was my professor's job to assign me a grade based on what I EARNED, not someone sitting in a cubicle (admissions) at TWU.

I feel your pain; however my last 60 was a 3.76 and I didn't get an interview, so it probably wouldn't make a difference unfortunately. :/

Just contacted TWU and all interviewees for the Houston campus have been selected. I was placed on the infamous waiting list. WHOMP WHOMP

Did any of your grades have a numeric grade? J/W. Because my real 3.73 went down to a 3.57 there and maybe that happened to you too. I can't believe someone with a 3.76 or 3.73 can't get an interview for a MOT program. Its unreal. Do you have to have a 4.0 from Harvard or Dartmouth?

Also, I think a big factor is that some people could have had a 3.0 or 3.2 last 60 undergrad but completed 12 graduate credits (only 4 classes) with 4.0's. TWU would then accept the 4.0 grad credits over the last 60. I wonder how many people got in this way? But like others have said, even getting an interview solely on GPA is stupid. Not many schools do that. The pre-req GPA wasn't even considered. 👎

Have you considered that maybe the recommendation or essay could have an impact? The pre-req GPA factors in later. Have you applied to other schools?

I see where you are getting at. So....

1. TWU told me that interview invites were based SOLELY on last 60 GPA.

2. I know the therapist personally that gave me my recommendation. My recommendation was a good one.

3. My essay was good and original. I'm sure it would have stood out but the reality is it probably wasn't even read. I also have an undergraduate independent research thesis under my belt that is up for peer review (psychology). How many applicants that got an interview can say that?

4. Yes, I am in the process of applying to 5 other schools for OT. If I get an interview invite from those 5 schools, it will further prove my point that TWU has a flawed system for selecting candidates.

5. Liztor, just because you got an invite from TWU, doesn't mean that you have to go on the defensive like you represent them. I just tell it how it is and I stand firm that TWU needs to alter the way they look at applicants.

It seems you may be on the defense, I merely asked if you had considered an alternative. Perhaps you should spend your energy on more positive matters. I wish you luck on your endeavors.

Was anyone accepted to TWU (Dallas or Houston) with less than a 3.5 cumulative or less than 3.7 on last 60 GPA? Did anyone acepted have any B's on any pre-req classes?

I have a 3.25 cumulative, 3.67 on last 60 hours, still working on pre-reqs... wondering if it's even worth applying at this point.

You never know, but based on my past experience, no it is not. I hate to sound so negative, but this is how it seems to be for Dallas campus. I have no idea about Houston. I was rejected last year with a 3.52 and there are many people this year (plently on here alone) that haven't received an invite but have fantastic GPA's (3.7 and up that I know of). I did land an invite this year, thank God, but my gpa is much higher now. I did have one B on my prereqs.

I have a 3.2 overall on my 120 some-odd hours. I have a 3.9 on my last 60; got my act together after a slow start. I have a 3.8 in prereqs, thus I have 2 classes with B's. 200 hours plus in shadow and am told the highest possible ratings and OT can give on the TWU recommendation forms. That being said, I was also given interviews at UTMB and Texas Tech. Tech looks at last 90 hours, thus my overall gpa dropped to 3.65 as in that 90 hours is an F and a D from the two times I took OCHEM. I think UTMB looks at overall as well as pre-reqs.

So, I would say that if you can get to other locations, then you should go for it. If you can look into UTEP-El Paso, A&M Pan American, etc... My mom is a nurse and she tells me it does not matter where a nurse gets her degree cause everyone takes the same boards and no matter where you graduate, you start off at about the same pay. An OT is an OT.

Good Luck everyone!!!

Definitely go for it! I am by no means trying to discourage anyone from OT, I am strictly talking about TWU Dallas. 🙂

I just got my email from Tech inviting me to the OT program for may 2012!!!!!! 🙂

Did they give you a date that you had to accept their offer by? Just curious, because a ton of people are on alternate lists.

My Tech invite was by Dec 2. So maybe some did not accept and now they are going to the alternate list.

I received an email today stating that I have been recommended for acceptance into the MOT program in Houston.

Has anyone else heard anything?

I got my recommendation for acceptance as well for the TWU-houston MOT program!! how exciting!

Did they give a deadline for you to reply? I got waitlisted and was wondering if I should have hope.

They have just notified us that we were recommended for acceptance. The official acceptance or decline of offer won't be until about Mid January for TWU. That is when we were told we would get official notification of entrance into the program. We won't know until then what the timeline will be.

Did anyone hear from UTHSC-San Antonio? Someone posted on the other 2012 thread that they received an email yesterday but no one else has mentioned it.

Also did the UTMB acceptance email have a date on which you had to accept their admission offer?
