2013-2014 Harvard Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Just going to point out, it would be possible to submit your secondary by the 10/22 deadline but not be complete until November if your LORs were delayed. I know people with ****ty pre-med committees who this happened to.

However, I'll just point out that it sounds like letters needed to be in by 10/22 as well (from the e-mail sent by HMS). They very well may allow extensions on this, though.

1) AMCAS application submitted by October 15th and verified by December 1st.
2) All recommendation letters have been logged as received by AMCAS by October 22nd.
3) HMS Online Supplemental Application finalized by October 22nd.

At many schools, I was not marked complete for a couple weeks after submitting, even though my letters were safe and sound in AMCAS weeks before I submitted. Schools just took their sweet time downloading my letters and signing off on my application.

Welp...it looks like everyone knows what month I submitted my amcas.

edit: just to clarify...i submitted everyone on the deadlines, the hold up in my application was the AMCAS verification. like any school, if you get too neurotic, you're gonna waste a lot of energy. receiving an II and what not depends on too many factors and varies too much from school to school for it to matter that much.

I know previous successful applicants have been posting that they did not send updates or LoIs, but what is Harvard's stance on fall grades? Should we send them a copy?

If it significantly alters your GPA for the better, I would consider sending in a copy perhaps combined with an update letter. If not, I wouldn't bother - there's no expectation that you will update them with your grades.

II this morning!! So excited! Anyone else?
The invitation was from NP, rejected from HST. Still, I was never qualified for HST to begin with. Can't wait for NP!

Complete Oct 15. 3.72/39
congratulations! Interviewing January 24 by chance?

As a matter of fact, I just signed up for that date! I will see you there. Maybe we can share a cab or something. I'll send you a PM if I can figure out how

If you both have a free hour, we should grab a drink (or a bite, or both)! I live/work walking distance away. PM if you find time 🙂

Just got back from interviewing on Tuesday! The students are fantastic...and mischievous--had a huge snowball fight in the quad.

Just to let you all know, from what I have seen, Harvard may do small interview sessions (like mine) and only have 9-10 people present per interview. They are very relaxing: the two physicians I met were nice. The only "unusual" questions they asked were about my MCAT score (mine is under 33, so my first interviewer was either asking out of concern or because he wanted to defend my application when presenting to the committee) and why I would want to work at the NIH instead of an academic institution where I could do the same type of work (the preceding question was "where do you see yourself in 20 years"). Other than that, they really just want to know who you are and what you can add to their amazing group of passionate students.

By the way, I think they interview until late January! There still may be some slots left =D

Happy Holidays you all =)

Would anyone who's had their interview mind sharing some advice for us who have them coming up re: what your interview experience was like or how best to prepare ? I realize it's a lot to ask so anything helps! I know a lot of people just say its a pretty bread and butter interview.. just know yourself and general ideas for some common questions, etc. but I'd love to hear what people's unique experiences were like with the interview/ideas for preparing 🙂

BTW I'm a Canadian applicant and my interview (NP) is mid-January.

Not much activity here in terms of iis in the past month or so

For me, NP was very much a tell-me-about-yourself interview. My first interviewer asked me questions about my childhood/parents/background, and my second interviewer wanted to know more about the more interesting courses I had taken and why I chose them.

It wasn't notably different from interviews at other schools aside from the fact that no one bothered to ask why Harvard. They know the answer to that one already, lol.

I interviewed at Harvard Med back in October and it was oh so lovely, but this wait till the first of March is absolutely KILLER
How do you know its the first of March? I interviewed back in October too by the way.

And I know what you mean about the wait. I wake up from dreams of myself opening my decision email in March almost daily. It sucks.

On my interview day, they said the first week of March I believe.

MSAR says march 3. Last year they sent out acceptances march 4.

Yeah, on my interview day they said they would tell us the first week of March (snail mail or email? I can't remember though). Students were incredibly kind and helpful. Many were just stopping after class to talk to us as we waited around. Med students have a four house system, which of course reminded me of Harry Potter and we were joking about that.

According to admissions staff, there will be no interviews in February, though it sounds like there are still a few interview days in January. ...not sure whether interviews are still rolling out though.

I guess it wasn't meant to be ;(

In an e-mail from Harvard admissions:

"Currently, we are no longer extending invitations for interviews for this admission season. While no admissions decisions are final until decisions are sent out, we do not expect to interview any more candidates for the MD programs in this application cycle."

Yep, I recently sent an update and received the following:

Thank you for your email and your continued interest in Harvard Medical School. I can confirm that your update has been received by our office.

Currently, we are no longer extending invitations for interviews for this admission season. While no admissions decisions are final until decisions are sent out, we do not expect to interview any more candidates for the MD programs in this application cycle. The next correspondence you will receive from us will be notice of our decision which should come in early March. No further information regarding your application status is available at this time.

Looks like its over... Good luck to all those going
We wish you the best in the remainder of the admissions season.
No, but I am assuming that we all will very shortly.

On the bright side, we can all proudly tell our kids one day that we applied to Harvard and even got rejected! 🙂

Good luck to those still in the running! And, to my fellow rejectees, good luck at whatever school you choose to go to.

So you're telling me there's a chance!

I sent them an update and they replied saying they are no longer sending out interview invites. 🙁
