Hey guys, it seems we are all in the same boat. Lets at least bring our anxiety down a little by posting in this thread. If you have been granted an interview, place the date you were granted and an 'I'. If you were asked to submit a Secondary, write the date and put an 'A'. This way we'll know where things stand. I've heard they invites are delayed until after a special MD and PhD admission committee meets to select. It does hold up Categorical invites sometimes.

Program Name:
Interview Requested: I
Secondary App Requested: A

i don't have any new schools to add, but was wondering if anybody knows whether all the research track programs provide higher salaries and give extra stipends. NW and U Chicago say they provide 4-5g a year during residency for supplies and travel and give extra 15g-25g in salary support during research year. I have not been able to find any other program that offer this. Is this unique to the chicago schools? thanks

I just got an invite from Penn this morning. There were still many spots open on interview broker.

Got an invite from U of Chicago's PSDP back in late September, not through interview broker so can't tell you if they've got openings. Looks like the first of their three "research" days is next week though.

All is quiet. Quick question. Would you guys choose a PSTP with a guaranteed fellowship at any location/program or an IM Categorical at a highly touted program? If our goal is fellowship and research, isn't taking the guarantee now the best? Vs 3 years IM followed by applying again followed by possibly moving followed by meeting new people, BUT with the possibility of getting a very envious fellowship? Would love Gutonc's opinion on this. Take the guarantee or hold out?

I actually held out. My #1 program didn't offer the guarantee but did allow you to apply early and did support the research pathway. My 2-4 were all integrated programs. It was kind of a hassle (and an additional expense) to interview so early (on the old timeline, if you did it this way you had to apply and interview mid-way through intern year...it's a little better now) but I actually got even better fellowship interviews than I did residency so it was definitely worth it for me.

Moral of the story, as long as you're competitive for PSTPs now, there's no reason you can't do it the way I did...and you may wind up doing "better" that way.

Thank you Gutonc. To clarify, you ranked and received your #1 in IM, then interviewed for fellowships during the intern year, and ended up getting fellowship at the same place or another location? What I don't understand is that if you reapply to fellowship in intern year, how different is your application than when applying from residency? Just the name of your IM place is now on your app?

In addition, when you go to places to interview that don't necessarily have a PSTP but do recognize the ABIM pathway, is it OK to bring up the fact that you would want to do a research track? Or is it best to just say you love IM, and then once an intern bring it up to the PD? It seems that if you come in within the first year and then are out interviewing at other locations people may tend to become disgruntled. Did you run into this? Really appreciate your expert advice.

I wound up staying put but interviewed at places for fellowship that didn't touch me for residency/PSTP.

To clarify, the new fellowship app timeline doesn't have you applying in intern year anymore if you do it this way, it would be in July/August of R2 with interviews in Sept - Nov.

As to when you should tell them...yesterday. You are correct that they'll get pissed (as is understandable) if you just wander into the PDs office near the end of intern year and say "oh, BTW, I need a LOR for fellowships, I'm applying now and want to do the research pathway so good luck with staffing in a couple of years". If they support the research pathway, bring it up at interview time. Some will be receptive, others may not. You need to know before you rank which it's going to be.

This may be a ridiculous question, but how do you gauge if you're competitive for PTSP programs now? Five invites? Ten? As of now, my top choices are all PTSPs but given the limited number of spots for these programs, it's very possible to end up a categorical somewhere. I'm sure I'm not alone in finding the thought of reapplying to anything in one years time to be unappealing.

On a final note, I've had radio silence for two weeks now. Anyone have signs of activity?

If they're interviewing you, you're competitive. It's that simple. Don't try to overthink it.

Question: Are all programs here (posted above) the 2 yr IM + 3yr research + additional yrs for subspecialty? I am only asking because I wonder if some programs are ONLY 2IM + 3 research WITHOUT direct match into the subspecialty? How do we know which ones give the direct match and which ones don't? This will become important when making the rank list, given that its probably important to know if the program that you are ranking is ONLY research w/o direct match vs the whole sha-bang.

Is it considered rude or weird if we ask them during the interview day?

It would be weird not to ask. Unless of course they state it at the beginning of the day during the description of the program...then it would look like you weren't paying attention.

The thing to keep in mind is that the research comes in the fellowship, NOT the residency (unless you're doing the research pathway in GIM which technically exists but I can't imagine anyone ever actually doing). So without the fellowship, there's not research.

Does anyone know how far down the typical PSTP applicant goes down their rank list, given that PTSP is different from categorical?

Does anyone know how far down the typical PSTP applicant goes down their rank list, given that PTSP is different from categorical?

I was wondering the same thing. I'm guessing that depends on how you rank the categorical programs at the institutions you interview at. FWIW, I'm guessing ranks 1-8 are important even if you're a strong applicant.

Anyone hear from the boston programs?

Does anyone heard from the cornell program if they got into the cornell or mskcc fellowship?

has anyone heard....sorry...brain fart

Has anybody heard back from any program?

At least for me, the recruitment calls/e-mails from various PSTPs started to slowly filter in around mid-January. I can't list the programs as it is a small world, but some have been very up front (e.g. guaranteed to match), whereas others have been pretty vague (e.g. your application is particularly strong and we'd love to see you here). I'm sure the latter means next to nothing as they've typically been form letters with photo-copied signatures.

Anyone out there have previous experience with IM PSTP post-interview communication they'd like to share? Particularly the odd phrase "you are guaranteed a position in the PSTP should you choose to match with the categorical program".

End of the day I wish research tracks had exemptions from the match as it would be nice to know what places want you so one could really dig in and compare the +'s and -'s of each institution's residency, fellowship, and research opportunities.

Quick update: I was contacted by UChicago informing me I was one of their top applicants. Not entirely sure what that means but happy to have heard from them.
