2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Personalized rejection from Central Iowa VA. Figured that one was coming though. Lots of sites left to hear from!

Interesting idea! I don't want to stand out based on what I'm wearing but you all make a great point (about feeling comfortable and confident). I should also add that I'll need to pump during interview days (ughhhhhh), so I need something easy and quick to get in and out of so I can pump quickly on breaks without having to ask for accommodations (oh the joys of being a new mama).

Thanks for all the advice! Guess I'll keep shopping. It's a good distraction to waiting to hear back from sites anyway! 🙂

I did want to mention that one site specifically asked me if I needed any accommodations, such as to breastfeed. (I didn't, but it made me appreciate that site a little more!)

I have a couple of questions about the Ann Arbor VA. They do not offer interviews, but they do offer an open house to all applicants. Here are my questions:

1. Does anyone have experience with this site and/or the open house? Any thoughts in general?
2. If you plan to attend an open house, they ask that you email them. The brochure says, "Please send us an e-mail message using the link to a dialogue page that appears on the Open House* Web page." In the brochure, the words "Open House" are blue as though they should lead to a link. However, I cannot get the link to open, nor can I find the "Open House Web page" that they reference by searching elsewhere. Does anyone know how to get to this web page?

Thanks so much for any help!!

I attended their open house last year and found it very helpful to learn more about the site. I honestly believe that much of what happened there did not factor into their ranking decisions, as it was pretty casual and I didn't get much 1:1 time with their faculty. We were able to have group "conversations" with faculty to better understand specific clinical and research opportunities. For whatever reason, I did contact them to let them know I was coming (I received a phone call inviting me), but they didn't have a folder/nametag ready for a few of us when we got there. Overall, I found the day helpful and am glad I went.

Has anyone heard from Rutgers biomedical child track? Any info is greatly appreciated!

I got an invite last week and emailed back my preferred date and two alternatives (within 15 minutes of getting the email), but haven't heard back from the administrative person (nor has one other person I know got an invite). I want to get the date set instead of trying to hold a bunch of dates ...

Just wondering: Anyone else hear from U of Louisville's clinical child internship or Lurie Children's Hospital recently? I heard they sent out invites/made calls last Monday and Tuesday.

I'm in the exact same boat. Haven't yet heard back from Dori. Hmm...

Did the email specify which adult track - Adult Medical Inpatient, Adult Psychiatric Inpatient, etc.?

Rejected from UCLA (Peds Neuro) but invited to Phoenix Children's/Barrow (Peds Neuro)... I'll take it.

Who needs to be 20 minutes away from the sandy beaches in California on internship, anyway? 😉

well some review applications as they come in and send out rejections before acceptance for interviews. Some sites actually receive to many applications and may cut off reviewing applications after they have accepted a number of applicants to interview

Why do I get the impression that "some sites" refers to the one internship site you were at?

You saying that "some sites" receive too many applications and may cut off reviewing applications after they have accepted a number of applicants to interview is just ridiculous and untrue. And may lead people to believe that if they got their applications in shortly before the deadline, their applications will not get reviewed. Well, I got all of my applications in last year with only a day or two to spare, and I got a lot of interviews.

Yes, I heard back from them last week. However, another student in my program had not heard back and so she contacted Dori. Apparently Dori had not received this student's email. Our university was having email problems that day, but either way you might want to follow up with Dori!

Hmm. Ok, good to know. It just seems weird that Dori wouldn't have received at least three other people's emails (in addition to the student in your program), right? I don't want to be a pest, but I guess I'll follow up tomorrow. Thanks!

Relax. There was a lot of buzz about this kind of thing on the list-serve around 11/1. It seems absolutely asinine to me, but evidently there were cases of sites closing the portal early. If some sites do this, then it woudn't surprise me if some sites also only review the first X applications.

Hey! Congrats on Phoenix Children's! Just wondering if you got an email or a phone call? I am still waiting to hear from them, peds neuro track. Thanks!

It seems pretty clear there's some history with the person who originally posted a statement about this. I'm not sure what or why, but it's a bit distracting from the purpose of this thread. This process is complicated enough without it..

If you don't mind me asking, what track did you apply for last year and did you end up matching. They usually give phone calls to people they re considering. Just want to know how much weight these phone calls hold.

Sending you a PM. For what it's worth, I did match, and this site did not cross any boundaries.

Same with me. My friend though did the same and she received a date/schedule confirmation before thanksgiving.

I think you misunderstood my post. I am not worried about applying to internship, as I matched last year and am on internship this year. I was referring to @OneNeuroDoctor's post about "some sites" (and by "some sites," he means the one site he interned at), not reviewing all of the applications they receive. Disagree that some sites only review the first X applications.

Has anyone interviewed before or heard about what the interviews are like at Columbia/NY Presbyterian? I am wondering if they ask you specific testing-related questions, e.g. interpreting a given Rorschach or MMPI profile..🤐

I am wondering when will they get back to people regarding interviews/rejections.

Is anyone else still waiting for Trinitas to confirm their interview date choice?

Similarly, is anyone still waiting for Chillicothe VAMC to confirm interview date choices? I received and responded to the invite on 11/25...
