2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know that I've said this before, but I can't stress this strongly enough: try not to freak out about your number of interviews until Dec 15. Seriously. I felt SO miserable around and during the week of Thanksgiving because I only had one or two interviews. In fact, I even applied to a site last-minute because I was so panicked (that ended up rejecting me anyway, haha). The rest of my seven invites all came flooding in after Thanksgiving.

And my experience isn't an uncommon one. I know because some other SDNers PMed me around that same time also worrying that they'd only end up with one interview. And these people also ended up getting a good number of interviews, in some cases a lot of interviews, and matching.

Received an email from Oklahoma Health Sciences Center 11/19 stating that I'm still under consideration although not part of the list of applicants they've invited for interviews. I applied for the VA and Adult Neuropsych positions. I'm not sure if everyone who is not invited is "still under consideration" or if that's just a nice way of letting us down 🙂

Have been too lazy/nervous to post but here we go.

Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center - Open house/ Interview invite sent out October 31 personal email. Open house dates are December 4th-5th and January 15th-16th.

Syracuse VA - Interview invite sent out November 14 personal email. Dates are Dec 8 or 19, and January 9 or 12

Marin HHS - Acknowledgment email stating that decisions will be made after November 30th deadline.

Connecticut VA - Mass rejection email received Nov. 19.

I received the same "rejection." I have no idea if everyone gets that or if there's a separate rejection e-mail saying you are no longer under consideration. My guess is that they want people to still rank them so that they won't have any empty slots leftover.

Thanks for posting, 4givr.

The crazy thing is that in this forum, there are folks posting that we are directly competing with, which drives the anxiety, uncertainty (for me, embarrassment at rejection). I think in that, its easy to forget how competent and qualified everyone is. I've talked to friends currently or recently on internship, and they too have talked about how much of a crapshoot it can be trying to sift through the applications. Additionally, this board (seems to me) to be filled with positive support. It makes me feel a lil bit better at least!

I suppose in the long haul, we have to have faith in this confusing process, and a lil faith in ourselves as well. 😉 Best of luck!

I have not heard anything from any site yet. Is anyone else in this situation?

I haven't heard anything yet and neither have my two closest friends in my program. It's still so early! My friends currently on internship keep reminding me that things don't really heat up until next week at the earliest, and really kicked in for them the first week of December.

I haven't heard anything from any of my sites yet either- good or no so wonderful news. I've heard from my supervisors that it's still very early in the process and no news doesn't indicate anything about my application, but may instead be a factor of the sites I applied to. I'm right there with you though anxiously awaiting my first e-mail/phone call! :nailbiting:

Thanks folks!

Does anyone know if UFlorida neuro track sends invites in batches? I know they sent out invitations on Tuesday. And do they send rejections?

It will also make you crazy. 🙂

NO KIDDING. I will say that so far, the notification dates this year have been pretty on target with last year, +/- 2 days. The side effect that within that margin of error, I could literally hear from several programs, every day, for the next 2 weeks. If you have the will-power, don't look at that thread... please!

4givr, was the Connecticut VA West Haven or Newington?

Will power? What's that? 🙂

Interview invite for Nationwide (peds track) by phone call on 11/20. Interviews on 12/15, 12/16, 12/19, and 1/5. Good luck to everyone in this stressful endeavor!

Hi guys, how many people from the same program do sites typically invite for interviews? We are 5 applying this year and there are 4-5 sites we are all applying to we all applying to. i am wondering if there are any negative consequences of this situation.
Some sites (Tampa VA in particular) won't review applications of any student from a particular program if more than 5 students from that program apply to the site. So my cohort kept a running list of all the sites we are applying to so we could see where we overlap. Luckily no more than 3 of us are really applying to any of the same sites..

Really? I have never heard of such a thing. I know some sites that have had multiple interns from the same school though. One place had three out of six of the interns from the same school, which would seem kind of odd. It is probably more likely to happen with students form large professional schools. Luckily my program is small so I did not even stress too much about it.

Don't view it as a competition. Some of it is just so random. We are all in this together, at least that is how I view it 🙂

Yeah I haven't heard this being an issue with a lot of sites but this is straight from the Tampa VA brochure:

"Due to increasing numbers of applications, we limit the number of applications we will consider from any one program or school to no more than six (6). We are relying on the graduate programs’ faculty and Training Directors to discuss these issues with their students and encourage only those who are competitive and truly interested in our program to apply. If we receive more than six (6) applicants from any one school/program, we will not consider ANY applicant from that school/program. For institutions that have both Ph.D. and Psy.D. programs in the same department, we will consider a total of only six (6) in any combination from that school. For schools that have different departments offering doctoral level professional training (e.g., a university offering a Ph.D. in counseling psychology out of the Education Department and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology out of the Psychology Department) we will consider up to six (6) applications from each of the different departments."

I'm sure some sites do this. There is a site very close to my university that frequently interviews an entire cohort. My advisor told me that sites have the ability to limit how many people from each university match. So they could rank 5 people from your program in positions 1-5, but let the system know that they don't want more than 2 people to match (for example). I'm not 100% sure this is true, but my advisor is usually pretty knowledgeable about these types of internship issues.

Do we know if Dec 15th is the date sites are "recommended" to let us know by again this year? I received a few emails saying not to expect to hear until Dec 19th! Also, I just looked in my email and noticed that last two invites arrived on Saturday, December 20th. I remember checking my email after going to see the movie Frozen and being surprised they arrived on a Saturday afternoon and so late in the game. I know that some of these sites already held interviews, but then apparently decided to interview more people.

Why should this be? What exactly is the problem here, and who benefits from the stated policy?

Interview invite via phone call from University Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Has anyone heard from UAB (neuro) today?

Our university actually had a lottery. You are forbidden to apply to those sites unless you "win" the lottery, to minimize the that your school's interns get kicked out of consideration.

People in my program tell me not to look at the current thread either. I find it way more helpful than anxiety-inducing. I did go and look at last year's thread...I'm disappointed though because half of my sites were never listed on it.

Invite from Lancaster General Health Neuropsychology via what seems to be a mass email. Received 11/20/14. Interview 1/8 - it's the ONLY date they offered.

Yup. Just got it as well. That is my first rejection. Good luck with the interview!! I sort of thought I might not qualify but was hoping to anyways...one place less to worry about, right? 🙂

Imagine similar scenario occuring in any other contexts. "We will only consider 6 individuals from (insert town name here, insert race here, insert religius affilated here, insert hair color here). If you violate this, you will ALL be disqualified." The media and EEO attourneys would have a field day!

Interview invite for Massachusetts Mental Health Center (general track) via mass email on 11/20. Interviews on 12/15.

Has anyone received a rejection from FCC Petersberg? I know that the BOP invitations went out to fill out the federal employment application so I am assuming not hearing by now means rejection?

Updated (and waiting to hear about some details of a few sites in PMs)
