2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh Wow! That sounds horrible! That's a really short phone interview...I thought they were usually at least an hour. Did they at least give you a chance to ask them questions?
They did, but that was a two edged sword. Ideally, I would have filled up the time with my amazing answers (as predicted in the introduction), but I had time to ask four questions, an indication I didn't use the time wisely.

Sounds more like an emotional drive-by than it does an interview. Sorry you had to experience that. Was it one of your preferred sites?

I haven't heard anything either.
Considering I've gotten rejections from several VAs (and only one invite) so far, I'm torn whether or not to attend to the open house. I really want a VA, but it seems that I may not be what most VAs are looking for.

I am still waiting on :

  • Napa State Hospital
  • Vacaville State Hospital
  • Fort Logan Colorado Mental Health Institute
  • Aurora Mental Health (Adult track)-I know people have heard from these guys so I am not sure what the hold up is...a rejection?

Also a handful of VAs but my track record with VAs has not been good. My track record with hospitals has been far better, so I am hopeful for some of these. ALSO if people applied to Vacaville, they were pretty awesome in emailing (way back when they received the application) that they would inform on December 11th. So today is the day to expect something from at least one of these guys!

So, I am having my first interview tomorrow and have eaten way too many cookies in this process of getting where I am headed :troll:. My how-to-dress questions for the ladies here is: I only have a choice between a white or dark blue blouse (weight gain -> elimination of other choices!!); my suite is sort of dark grey. I am concerned that dark blue looks too depressing and white too color less and conservative. I could wear a scarf with either of the two. The scarf is not that colorful either though. Thoughts all:clap: - question is not a joke. I know it downs ridiculous but it is really important to me. I want to feel comfortable with what I am wearing.

I would not do dark blue and dark grey. I would do white shirt and if you wear makeup, maybe do a brighter lip or nail color (pick one or the other) to balance the lack of color else were. Also, a fun necklace or earring would help make the white/gray less conservative but I would pick one or the other.

Honestly, I feel it's best to wear what makes you feel the most confident and comfortable. Look polished, but don't stress too much over clothing... 🙂
Agreed. I don't see anything wrong with either color combination, and really it's about how you feel most comfortable!

Also, "Don't feed the troll!!!" That's hilarious.

I'm still waiting on:
Loma Linda Medical Center
University of Kansas (Comprehensive track). I know they already sent out invites to some, but I have not heard either way so I am not writing them off yet!

Thanks! While I want to feel comfortable, I am also thinking that dark colors might convey something negative or depressing. No?

I agree! I am somewhat androgynous and feel most comfortable in button down shirts tucked in, suit jacket, and pants. Oh...and pack Bandaids! I accidentally cut my finger on a sheet of paper the morning I was getting dressed for my first interview and got blood over my collar. Got it out with water and spent the next 20 minutes blow drying my shirt, which cut into my time for breakfast (scarfed down a ridiculously expensive $20 buffet). So...yeah. Pack band aids and more than one shirt!

Still waiting on Springfie

I don't think that dark colors will seem too depressing, but then again I do tend to wear dark colors a lot! I might be more concerned about wearing white only because every time I wear white, I somehow manage to get food on my clothing...

For the people that got an interview at the Illiana VA- did the TD confirm your date? I haven't heard anything since Friday...

Congrats to all with invites! Just wondering, has anyone heard from Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences child track? I met someone on an interview today who noted she was interviewing there, but have yet to see it posted here. Thanks so much!

Is it weird that with our power out in San Francisco one of my first thoughts was "how will I check my email?"

Getting ready to fly to SF via Dallas right now for my first interview tomorrow! River in the sky, have mercy on us all!

Seriously, couldn't there have been a better time? My plan is to swim from hotel to site to show I'm a fighter. 🙂

Everyone I've talked with about suit colors is wearing either a black or dark grey suit. I'm wearing brown. I do want to echo what everyone is saying though about feeling comfortable and confident - if you have second thoughts about what you're planning to wear, you'll be better off wearing something else.

Any other SDNers apply to WVU Health Science Center (in Charleston)? Since they do an open house (by invitation--isn't that a "closed house"?) I sent an email to Dr. Linton expressing my interest in their site and in attending one of the open houses. I know it's a combination of best fit and expressed interest in going for a visit. Anyway, I sent that application in early, on Nov. 20th because I was done with it and emailed Dr. Linton the same day. I haven't heard anything back from him. Has anyone else emailed to ask to attend an open house? If so, did you hear back? Should I email him again? It's been 3 weeks. I expected at least a confirmation of the email or something, since they seem so friendly!

Did anyone get an invite from Emory, I see they sent out rejections and wait list. What's with the suspends Emory!
Probably sent out the easy rejections quickly (not enough hours, obvious mistakes in cover letter, etc.). I imagine you're in some sucky limbo. I know that feeling.
