2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm really starting to feel pretty ****ty about it all at this point. I know that I've heard back from less than half of my sites but it is still really disappointing when all you've heard is rejections. I thought I was a good fit for several of them. I really just want to know what did it for me.

Does anyone have any recommendations at what point it is ok to e-mail a TD to ask what was the problem?
Probably after match. They're quite busy until then.

Not sure if this one was posted yet:

12/11/14, Rejection from Eastern Kansas VA- Leavenworth, personalized email.

I've regressed from eating actual cookies to eating Chirstmas cookie dough by the tube (no spoon, just peeling the wrapper back like a banana)
Has anyone received an official rejection from the Topeka site?

To anyone who applied to CMHI Fort Logan- Who did you address your cover letter to? I'm looking at their materials, and I swear it's a new name on there for the internship director.. but it hasn't been updated since August, so I must have just completely skipped over the name. oops.
I didn't end up applying but I did have the same question when I asked one person said they changed directors. But he also said that it didn't matter about the cover letter. So I wouldn't worry!

I'm sorry you're going through this stress, and wish you the best of luck in interviews this time. It seems helpful that you have such specific feedback-I'm sure you're doing mock interviews to make sure that you feel (appropriately) confident this time. That was such interesting feedback- I would think confidence is a good thing! This process can really make us second guess our worth as clinicians. Remember- it's not about your value or your worth..it's about an imperfect (okay, awful) system that sadly hurts many good people.

Thank you everyone. I think the problem is mostly cultural (and me being overwhelmed by the cultural changes), I am not from the US originally and believe it took me this long to start getting accustomed to how different social/professional interactions are, so the interview process seems like just another level that I don't understand, like am I back to first square when I came to this country and began school. I'll keep trying but these recommendations are very useful.

In my opinion, that sets you up very well to be working with diverse populations. Capitalize on that!! And be super proud of it!! That's something many applicants do not understand first hand making you a gem! Best of luck.

Do you guys email thank you notes after interviews to interviewers?
I think it depends on the site/how you feel about it. I've had two interviews and have sent thank you notes. I kept them really short (a few lines) and didn't say anything about the ranking process or matching. The thing to remember is that sites most likely will not write back to TY notes -- so if that will create anxiety for you, maybe best not to send any Thank Yous. It's certainly not required.

Thats cool though, 10 more sites to hear back from. Hopefully I can get at least 5 more interviews.

The average was 6 right? I'd like about 10-12!!

Has anyone heard from Lewisville Independent School District, University of Tennessee HSC, and Mt. Sinai Adolescent Health Center? Thank you!

Anybody heard from Hefner VA (Salisbury NC) or Maine VA? Their stated notifications dates were today.

Any rejections or invitations from Denver Health to their Health Psychology with Outpatient Adult Mental Health track? I'm still hoping for hope there...

I'm waiting on Hefner VA and Maine VA as well, definitely a let down to not hear from either of them today.

Forgot to mention on my earlier Jesse Brown VA reply that today's cookie tally is: 2 homemade sugar cookies and a homemade chocolate chip cookie. I couldn't sit still during lab meeting this afternoon, so the spread of cookies on my advisor's desk just seemed like the only logical option. Yeah, sure I'll have that discussion section...wait what?!

No in that mass confirmation and anxiety reducting nicely worded email they said that they will let everyone know on Monday Dec 15th about their status
I was hoping that since it said "by" December 15th, they'd let us know a bit earlier. Guess not. Le sigh.
