2014-2015 APPIC (internship) interview thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are many of you still waiting on sites? I'm waiting on two, and am not sure when to just count them as rejections and make my other travel reservations. I emailed them Tues

I'm still waiting to hear from UF counseling center. They sent out invites/rejections on the 15th, but I didn't get anything either way. I sent them an email on Thursday, but it hasn't been returned. I'm pretty much counting it as a rejection at this point.

Done with interviews until December 30th. My interview yesterday had homemade Christmas cookies that one of the psychologist made 🙂 I am still waiting to hear from a few sites with later interview notification dates. I did not hear anything either way from St. Luke's and am really sad because that was my number 1 last year and was hoping for another chance to interview there.

Anyone heard from Howard Counseling Center yet? I know their notification date is this Monday...but hoping invites go out sooner. 🙂

Hi there! I'm also waiting to hear from Howard and was wondering if you've received an email from them yet. I know they moved back the original notification date.

Ann Arbor VA!
Personal call from TD
Told I was one of their top applicants and would be a very good fit, reminded of the open house dates Jan 14 and 21. Asked to please RSVP by email. Reminded the Open House does not affect rankings at all, just good for confirming fit from the applicant's point of view.

Bet they are working through a list, everyone! Hoo hoo! :owle:

Edit: Neuropsychology for me, so I guess that falls under the neuro/gero/health track at Ann Arbor. He didn't mention it in the call.

Just got a call from Ann Arbor as well so they are still working through their list apparently! To add to this info, I was told of 204 applicants they are calling the top 20... I'm assuming regardless of track since that was not mentioned.

I did not know that! I see it says 12/18 on the website but used to say 12/22? What do you have down?

Did you call back then or wait it out?
I was in a session with a client, checked my phone afterwards, saw there was a weird, out-of-state number, googled it to see it was a small town where one of my main sites was located, double-checked it was indeed the TD's phone number, and called back on a whim. It was probably about 45-60 minutes later, and i was like, "Hi, this is _______ and I saw I got a call from this number?" And she was very nice and it worked out well. I wouldn't wait too long on it, especially given the holidays coming up. I'd say call on Monday. Though I don't have anything other than anecdotal impressions to base this off of, it seems that most phone calls people get are for invites and the rejections from phone-using sites go out in a mass email. Never hurts to call! Especially since it shows you're enthusiastic and have initiative, etc., etc.

Nice! 🙂 Thanks for the anecdote.

Has anyone received an invitation to interview at Howard University? They pushed notification date up from 12/22 to 12/18...

Does anyone know what interview dates Manhattan Psychiatric Center has given in previous years? I could not find it on previous threads. Their notification deadline is later (listed as 12/30, which is consistent with previous years).

I wish I knew! I emailed the TD on 12/17 to see if he could tell me possible dates - and he responded the next day saying he didn't know and should be able to let me know in the "next few days" ... Haven't heard anything since.

Thank you for mentioning this! If you end up hearing back please let us know. I wish they at least publicized their dates. Hopefully if someone gets an invite they will be able to contribute it to this thread for future applicants to have an idea too.

How is everyone handling clients during this time? I feel awful about being gone for three weeks traveling to interviews. My supervisor understands somewhat, but when he applied to internship in the early 1990's it was nothing like it is now and he was able to do an internship in the city he lived in. So, he's surprised by the number of interviews I'm accepting and that they are all over the country! I tried to explain to him that the system has completely changed since he applied over 20 years ago! Is anyone else feeling guilty about being away from clients for so long?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with interviews last year at any of the following sites:

Pilgrim Psychiatric
Northeast Florida State Hospital
Wyoming State Hospital
Florida Department of Corrections
Liberty Healthcare

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Life happens. Psychologists get sick, get injured, take vacations, etc. You and supervisor are ethically obligated to arrange coverage for cases you feel are a safety risk with a gap in service.

Is anyone still waiting to hear from Children's Institute, Inc.? Happy holidays everyone!

I feel guilty as well. I am currently at a private practice for practicum, and I try to think of it as I'm saving them money for 3 weeks. But there's also a fear that some of them will not want to resume again after the 3-week gap and I need them to stick around because it's really hard to build a caseload at that site.

Has anyone heard from Orlando VA? That is the only site I am left waiting for!

Is anyone going to be interviewing in Boston the weekend of the 10th (I'm interviewing at Mass. Mental Health Center on the 12th) and is looking to split a hotel room?

I'm just curious, does anyone know the likelihood or research stats that say the percentage of people that get their 1st ranked site vs last ranked place (and those in between). I'm just curious since I've only heard of people getting their top few choices or not ranking at all. I've never heard someone say they ranked at their 7th, 10th, or even 5th ranked site. I'm guessing it must happen.

I know someone who matched at their 10th (and last) ranked site. Though I'm not sure if it was actually her 10th site (if other sites had multiple tracks/positions she ranked prior).

I never heard from St. Luke's either. I emailed the director in the morning on Friday but haven't heard anything back. It's frustrating not to hear anything either way (when their notification date is long gone) given the time and effort we put into our application for each site (not to mention money). Argh. Well let me know if you hear anything!

I received a rejection on Friday the 19th (?) I believe. It was a mass rejection. If you haven't heard back, maybe you are still being considered! Or email them? 🙂

Still waiting to hear back from 1 site within a consortium, thus I cannot find the email address of the supervisor. . . unless I use the site's website to get the email address. What are your guys' thoughts on emailing the site this way? Maybe tomorrow. . . I have talked to other students in my program and so far no one who applied to that site has heard back. Fingers crossed we hear back soon. Any suggestions are appreciated!!!:cat:

I emailed today and haven't heard a thing. I wish they would just send an email indicating that they are still looking at apps if that is the case.

Rejection from Manhattan Psychiatric Center received 12/23/14 1123AM EST via mass email.

Hopefully someone got an invite and can contribute the info to the thread for future applicants to have an idea! Looks like they at least notified on rejections a little earlier this year.

Has anyone heard from CAMH or know when their notification date is? Also still waiting to hear from Trinitas....

I just caught the plague, and while I feel miserable and can't be with family for the holidays - I just keep thinking "AT LEAST IT'S NOT DURING INTERVIEWS"

Did anyone get a confirmation date from Orlando VA? I have to try to reschedule another interview in order to attend, but I am hoping for confirmation first before I email the other TD to reschedule.

Anyone else had this experience? I live in the east coast, and am originally from California. I'm trying to get back to Cali, so I primarily applied over there. I got invited to all of my East Coast internship sites, minus one. I only got one invite to Cali. Anyone have a similar experience regarding rejection from locations far far away?

Well, I've heard that internships in CA are more competitive because folks want to live here or at least experience it for one year. I'm in CA and only got a few internship interviews from sites here.

Not sure if true, but I'd imagine internships in popular cities/states get more applicants than less popular cities/states.

FINALLY heard from the TD via email this afternoon. I'm hoping you heard good news as well. Best wishes for the holidays!

Has anyone heard from Kaiser, Walnut Creek?
I received an mail from Kaiser Walnut Creek TD on Dec 15 and it looked like a mass email stating that she would follow up with a phone call to schedule an interview time. I did speak with her by telephone a few days later and scheduled an interview for late Jan. It seemed as if she was scheduling interviews as they fit into her work schedule, so necessarily only interviewing on specific days or times.
