*******2014-2015 General Surgery Interview Invites/ Rejections Thread*******

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OH man, I remember pining over these threads back in the day. Refereshing it with fervor every minute of every waking moment, seeing a new interview date or new program get listed and wondering if I'd ever match anywhere or amount to anything or ever reach my goals.

Keep at it, stick to it, keep fighting, never give up.

And in the end, 10 yrs from now, when youre an attending sitting in your office on a thursday with no elective cases and you log onto SDN after being gone for years. You'll chuckle to yourself about how neurotic you used to be, and how far you've come.

Great to see this site is still going strong.

Gave up a few spots in places that my SO was less interested in due to lack of career options and the realization that interviewing has been an expensive affair for me personally esp with flight delays and cancellations. Hope that those spots makes someone's Christmas wishlist - they're good programs, just not the right fit overall. Good luck on the trail everyone!

To anyone reading this thread in future years: RELAX! People get interviews at different times, often way after they're posted on this thread. I was worried originally because I felt like I had less interviews than other people in this thread early on but now its mid-December and I have more interviews than I can attend. You will be fine, just take a deep breath and embrace the wait.

Some other little tips:
  • "When do I schedule my best interviews?" I'd recommend having 2 warm up interviews then going to your best places. You'll burn out sooner than you think and answers can get dry. You WILL be tired by interview 6-7, you'll be a disgruntled by ~10ish.
  • Its impossible to schedule everything in a nice logical order, but if you're applying all over the US I think its possible to schedule one coast early and another late to help minimize travel costs.
  • If you live in a small town and can afford to be away from school during interview season, try to crash with family or friends who live by a major airport between Nov 3rd-Jan 15 (95% of surgery interview season).
  • Schedule flights early with southwest, then use their no cost ticket changes to rebook as new interviews come in.
  • The best way to fold a suit is not to fold a suit. Most carriers (read: everyone but the discount guys ie. allegiant, frontier, spirit) will let you carry on a garment bag without saying anything, even if you have a carry on and another small personal item. If you have to fold, youtube instructions first and steam in the bathroom when you get there.
  • The name tag goes on your right lapel.
  • Email the programs you love and haven't heard from but wait until their offers go out (it got me 2 interviews to programs I'm ranking in my top 5).
  • Keep an extremely detailed journal on interviews (because everything looks the identical after interview #4).
  • TALK TO YOUR FACULTY! As many as you can, preferably. Depending on your region, there WILL be awesome programs you wouldn't recognize. Did you know U of Alabama is a top program? Can you find UPitt or UMaimi's programs on ERAS? Do you know which community programs are 'workhorse' programs and which are 'gentlemans' programs? Your faculty know!
  • Coming from an academic program but not sure if you want to do academia? This is your life to enjoy, don't let academic faculty drive to toward a career you may not want. Apply broadly, be honest with yourself.
  • Pack granola bars. Some programs don't feed you as much as you expect!
  • Resist the urge to buy a super-tailored suit. Interview season makes you fat.
  • Dinners introduced as optional are NOT mandatory and will NOT harm your chances of matching to a program if missed, HOWEVER, they are often the most important opportunity to really learn how a program runs, and it would be to your great benefit to attend as many dinners as you can.

Any word from Rush University? Do they typically send out invites late? If any Rush students could share any information they had I would be very appreciative.

Love this Cool Whipple! I know most ppl here are probably ending their interview season...I'm half way through. Got 5 more in Jan (woohoo....) I'll add some advice too for fun that I have found pretty helpful. BTW I've been wearing my name tag on my Left Lapel! NOOOOOOOO...

1) Invest in a good GPS - driving in cities that are foreign can be challenging and stressful...after getting lost for 1 hour on the Jersey Turnpike, I went for a good GPS and it was a life saver. The ones at the rental car places suck..avoid those b/c it actually made me more lost. When driving a rental car, at night, on a freeway you don't know...using your iPhone can be dangerous and difficult.
2) Wrinkles in suits - buy Fabreeze anti wrinkle spray, it works and it is amazing! And then you smell very fresh....seriously get some.
3) Don't take too much of a chance on a colorful suit - Now I think some might disagree but I've seen a bunch of suits and the dark suits look best to me. I've seen very few ppl pull off a non-black suit let alone a weird colored one. A colorful top, color tie, color socks (for guys) is a better way to stand out than a weird colored suit.
4) Don't forget to SMILE - esp during interviews, seriously smile...it makes everyone more relaxed.
5) Don't be afraid to tell the truth - I love video games (I'm a girl)...I don't know how many interviews I've had where I just end up talking about Call of Duty for like 20 min. So whatever dorky thing you love to do, just tell ppl...don't feel like you have to say something super smart like you rescue orphans or something in your spare time.
6) Don't be afraid to joke - I'm always a joker...and tasteful jokes can really leave a lasting impression. I've had interviews this season where there was nothing but banter the whole time and just me and the interviewer cracking up the whole time.
7) Don't drink coffee in the car before your interview....driving and drinking coffee can lead to spilling on your suit...I had a close call with a white blouse (phew) - for this reason pack an extra blouse/top, you never know.....
8) Check out the town - if you can, fly in early and leave later so you get a chance to look around, explore a little...afterall you might live there for the next 5 years! This is a great chance to do some traveling and sightseeing.

Ugh talk about weight gain! I've never been feed so well since I started medical school. Need to seriously start running after Jan is over....

Hi all,
I was hoping to make a swap for interview dates for Lenox Hill in NYC
I have: 1/9/15
I want: 1/16/15
I understand this is very last minute but I would be willing to cover any transportation/arrangements costs in order to accommodate the switch.
Please message me if you are interested.
Thanks!
Brian

Hey guys! I just got off the wait list at my #1!!!! 1 week before the interview!!!

Keep the dream alive :p

hi guys. wondering if anyone out there is planning on canceling Duke, final interview date. My fiancé is applying for a job there and we really want an interview. Please PM me before you do!

If you interviewed at Mayo Scottsdale, please PM me - need to confirm something with you.

on an interview a few weeks ago, a resident told me that this year there are 1.1 US medical graduate first time applicants for each categorical surgery position

1 - is that kind of data really available to programs right now?
2 - and/or, was he correct about the number?

I have no idea, but based on how my interview trail has gone, and what applicants, residents, PDs, and personal mentors have all told me throughout this process, I am inclined to believe that is true. US medial graduate numbers and student debt continues to rise; general surgery pays well, isn't as crazy competitive as ortho, plastics or ENT, and is no longer as unappealing as it used to be. However, I also think US grads are now applying to more programs as well, and are now willing to settle for less appealing positions due to their immense loans versus going unmatched - less appealing positions which were typically taken up by IMGs.

In Full transparency !!!

With the rank list due date looming over us I thought people applying to Creighton may want to know that the program director is leaving at the end of this month now too.
So they will now be looking to replace their Chairman and PD.... In addition to the battle with BCBS and working on their transition to a new hospital in a couple years.
So needless to say a lot of ??????? And instability At the moment.
Thought it's only fair people have all the information when thinking about their future.

Wow, Thanks for the info. Sounds pretty scary with all of that going on. Does anyone else know of any other programs where these type of shake ups are occurring??

Ahhhhh all this waiting is really annoying...just let us know we matched already!

Did anyone get a we want u letter? I got a half assed one that started strong but ended with a survey attached

Wow, a whopping 483 of 2526 unfilled positions at this point in the game... nearly 20% unfilled gensurg spots. I guess we're going for least popular specialty this year, just short of radonc with 25% unfilled. :highfive:

Good luck on Friday! :biglove:

The vast majority of those unfilled spots are prelims. There are more surgery prelim positions than there are general surgery categorical. From last year: http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Main-Match-Results-and-Data-2014.pdf

ETA: And SouthernSurgeon beat me to it....:)

That's preliminary...hardly a reflection of the popularity of the specialty of general surgery since these are one year positions and there are thousands of them.

I heard there were exactly 2 categorical slots unfilled, but I don't have access to the list to verify that.

yeah, in every interview i went on, the PD remarked about a substantial increase in applications. i know a couple of great AMG candidates who didn't match.

Sigh I didn't match :( Super sad...my friend who had 25 interview offers also didn't match. He ranked 15...We are both in shock. Not sure what happened, was told I had a strong app from many places I interviewed. I ended up ranking 10 with many safety programs.

There were only 2 categorical surgery spots in SOAP this year. The rest were all prelim. Luckily, 3/5 of us surgery folks were able to grab a prelim spot including me. They went so quick too! There are no more left after yesterday which is crazy. Many programs actually had more SOAP applications then regular ones they received. One friend SOAPed into a family medicine program that she was rejected from initially....such as werid process.

But anyways...been a super depressing week for me. I haven't slept for many days. Gotta do this again next year ugh seems so painful. Good luck to everyone who matched and congrats! I hope you all get where you want to go tomorrow!!!

I'm really sorry to heart that, TheOcean. I appreciated all your contributions to this thread and wish you all the best in finding a position next year. Maybe you can rock out as an intern and they will have no choice but to keep you :) Crazier things have happened!

Three of our prelims from this year will be with us as categoricals next year... 1 as a pgy2 and the other two matched with us. All strong residents and good guys, so I'm very happy for them. 5 of the 8 prelims in my program applying for something this year matched (those 3 for surg, 1 in ortho, and one obgyn).
