2014-2015 SUNY Buffalo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to those accepted! Do you mind sharing your stats? Grades in prereqs? Where did you do your prereqs?

So I wouldn't worry as much about stats as some people do--they do not say much about the candidate. I think if your MCAT score is within a few points of the mean and same thing with your GPA then your stats only prove that you are most likely academically suited for the school. Other things to keep in mind are your letters, your essays, your interviewing abilities, etc...Ask yourself do your traits fit with what UB is looking for? Is the location suitable for your needs?

EDIT: I kind of don't want to post all of my stats in a public forum, if you are still curious feel free to PM me!

To those wait listed could you please let me know if you sent in update letters? There is no place to upload documents in our app. I emailed an interest letter back in Jan. I interviewed Sept 3rd and was wait listed Oct 15. I feel like admissions probably forgot me by now...I don't want them to think I am not interested, but at the same time there isn't really a way for us to submit interest letters? Has everyone else just been waiting around, too? Or did you all submit letters?

Has anyone received a financial aid package from UB? I was accepted from the wait list today (interviewed in February) but I have an acceptance and a generous scholarship at another school so I would want to know the financial aid breakdown before making a decision. Does anyone know if UB gives out any scholarships (aside from the tuition break for being an in-state student) or should I just assume that my financial aid would be equivalent to the total cost of attendance ($62.6K) listed on MSAR?

State schools rarely give out aid in the form of scholarships. It's worth an ask, when I got pulled off the waitlist, I was not given any scholarship or money to sway me. If you're crunched for time on a decisions, assume that the COA for them won't change. Also welcome to the FB @demystifie

UB gives approximately one quarter of the students each year some type of merit or need based scholarship.

Praying I get into SUNY Buffalo-- loved the non- competitive atmosphere, the student body, location and certainly can't complain about the tuition as an in-stater. Looks like there has already been quite a bit of Wait- list Movement. Does anyone know if they're going to be releasing tiers? That'd be wonderful, and also give me some of peace of mind. Congratulations to those of you who have been accepted! 🙂

I concur with your UB assessment. Best of luck to you!

What happens if we didn't fill FAFSA by March 1?

Mysterious

Then it takes longer to get your aid, probably. Did the same, was accepted early April, still haven't received my package.

And I'm on my phone and replied to the wrong quote, so there's that, too. This is with regard to filing FASFA after the due date.

Yes I understood 🙂 on the website it says we aren't eligible for some types of aid anymore... Which if it is true would really suck.

Thought I'd create an account. Was accepted off the Wait- List earlier today. Interviewed back in September! I WILL BE ATTENDING🙂 Extremely thrilled 🙂 Waiting for an email from GradAdmit so that I may setup a UB Person Number and pay my deposit. Again, congratulations to all those accepted and best of luck to those of you who are still waiting!

Have they sent out a "class has been filled" email yet? Im not sure what's going on, just curious.

Or maybe they realized how confusing that email was for people in previous years, so they decided not to send it.

Thereby confusing and stressing out everyone this year. :/
I emailed Mr. Rosso and he said they will not be sending out an email with ranking updates. I'm assuming we probably won't hear anything in the future unless we get off the wait list. Good luck everyone!

Anyone know approximately how many are on the WL and how many get accepted afterwards? This may have been answered before.

I don't think anyone is going to be able to answer that for you. And honestly, probabilities are more helpful than raw numbers. Traditionally, UB tends to get through the top 1/2 to 2/3 of the waitlist.

Starting April 23rd (last day of direct-admit), we'll say that you have a 67% chance to make it off of the waitlist.

As of May 12th, your odds are somewhere between 0% and 67%. But unless you want to data-mine old waitlist threads, it's hard to say anything more than that. Even then, such a small percentage of people post on SDN that you'd have no idea how close you are to the real numbers.

We'd all love to have more information, but unfortunately they decided to stop releasing rank information to applicants (top/middle/bottom third).

If 2/3 of the list ultimately gets accepted (25 of 37), then there's still about a 50% chance that you'll be offered a seat.

[Edit: as a lower estimate (i.e., only 1/2 of the waitlist get accepted), there's still about a 28% chance at this point. So our real chance at this point is probably somewhere in the range of 30-50%.]

...And we're moving to direct phone calls.

"On Wednesday, July 1st, we will begin filling any/all openings in our 2015 Freshman Medical Class by DIRECT PHONE CALL to the next candidate, and if "LIVE" contact is not made after using all your available phone numbers, we must continue to proceed down the wait list to the next highest ranked candidate."

Anyone did some/all their prereqs at a community college or know how UB views people who did?

any current med students at buffalo have any idea how the waitlist movement for this new cycle looks?
