2014 APPIC internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys,

I haven't posted on these forums since I was deciding on my grad school applications but here I am again at what feels like that process all over again.

I have a question about deferring registering for the Match until after finding out whether one received any interviews, or after Dec. 15th.

The Match service remains open until the beginning of Feb. and one can register without DCT written authorization as long as they do so before Jan. 1st.

I am trying to save up as much money as possible and it wouldn't make sense to drop another $130-160 if it will be for nothing. Any experience with people who have done this would be appreciated.

Oh and one last thing. I wouldn't have had any qualms about this until my DCT scared me into thinking that TDs will think I'm not serious about internship if my AAPI is submitted without an applicant code number. Somehow this (according to my DCT) may paint me in an unfavorable light and I will not be considered for internship.

Thoughts??

If a site's APPIC directory page lists a minimum number of hours, but their brochure says absolutely nothing about said minimum, what exactly should you make of that?

I would go with whatever information you saw listed, either directory or brochure. I found many of my sites to have it listed on one or the other, but many times not both. I feel that site directors put their energy into updating their brochure (mainly) or their APPIC site, but maybe they don't spend their time doing both because they want their applicants to be resourceful and their time is limited, but we have plenty of time to be raging lunatics complusively checking and rechecking to make sure all is copacetic. IMO, of course.

You need to look more closely at APPIC's rules. I don't think you can submit any applications to any sites (or sites will simply not accept the apps) without an APPIC applicant code number and your DOT's authorization/approval of your training hours. You won't get any interviews because no one will process an incomplete app.

This is a tough game. Sad that they make us fork up the cash now or wait until we can afford to.

To my knowledge, you DO have to pay for your application fee (e.g. $400 for 15 sites) but you do NOT have to register for the match before November 1st. So actually, MiJac can have his/her application reviewed by sites without spending the $130 for the match. To answer your question, MiJac, I would think that not being registered by November 1st would NOT adversely impact your applications, because the NMS website suggests you register by December 1st. If you register after December 31st, your DCT must provide explicit written authorization. So, if you are really concerned about the $130 NMS fee, you could probably wait until early December to hear about some interviews before you pay it.... although, as CheetaGirl pointed out, you'll need to pay a hefty fee for APPIC to process your application.

Cheetahgirl, I did read carefully that's why I'm asking since the aapi explicitly states that an applicant code number (registering for the match) is not necessary to submit an application.

As you pointed out, I am aware that two fees would be collected: the aapi fee for the application (which I intend to pay) and the match fee which I was hoping to defer until further notification of interviews.

So my question is simply, will this affect my chances of being considered for internship if I don't pay the $130 up front?

Research girl has kindly answered this and that's what I was thinking but I was also wondering if anyone might have first hand knowledge or experience of anyone who has actually done this in the past. thanks in advance 🙂

I registered slightly later in the whole match process (e.g., sometime in early December I think), and it didn't seem to affect my application. If a site didn't have my match #, they just asked me to email it to them. That being said, I of course can't speak for every site out there. I'd be very surprised if it altered anyone's chances, but stranger things have probably happened.

Thanks. I'm mainly wondering because I am below that number of intervention hours. I guess I'll apply anyway since my cover letter's already written.

I find it hard to believe not having a Match number is any kind of deciding factor. And for sites, they can easily get your Match number, using your name, when they do the ranking. They system has crosschecks and makes that part easy for sites. So it does make sense to see if you have enough interviews to decide about entering or deferring a year before putting down money. If you have registered and then withdraw, do they refund your fee?

I know people that went through this process last year who specifically waited until December (after they got confirmation of their first interview) to pay the Match fee. Many in my cohort this year are doing the same thing. The people who waited to pay the match fee last year did end up matching, and I have never heard of anybody saying that not paying the fee earlier affected their chances. Obviously, I can't say for sure that there aren't some sites out there who really care about this, but even the APPI instructions say that the match number is not required for the application, and that sites can obtain our match numbers later on.

It is non-refundable.

Related to this, once you have it, you could put your match number on the top of your CV, particularly if you print out a few extra copies to bring with you on interviews.

Okay, sorry about that. I won't comment on this anymore because as WisNeuro said, it's stressing me out. Good luck if you can stay on top of this and possibly save money. I like the idea of putting your match # on your CV when you go for intervies. I have my match # on top.

hey guys and gals, anyone know if your DCT gets notified after EVERY separate submission to sites? I don't believe this is the case, but just checking. Say, if I am applying to 18 sites, will my DCT get a notification after each one, thus allowing him to view which sites I sent in apps to?

The folks on last year's APPIC thread determined that, yes, the DCT sees each time you submit an application.

k thanks, cara susanna. ugh, was hoping that wouldn't be the case. 🙂

Do you all think it'll look FREAKY if you're submitting applications late into the evening (but before 12am)? This may be a hightly neurotic question, but I'm on a roll and have the chance to power thru and send half of them tonight so I can get them off my plate.

Thanks!

P.S. I'm so enraged that SDN is transitioning right now...I miss the little stress-relief icons and dancing bananas and whatnot.

Do you mean submitting them all at once? I don't think so, that's what I'm planning on doing.

I highly suggest you submit early because I couldn't catch a break during applications. If there's errors, you want to give yourself 2-3 days to have it corrected. Also, make sure you check the page that tells you your application is complete (that you didn't forget to designate a LOR for example).

Good luck all!

Well, it'll look better than the one I submitted last Friday night at 2am to a site where I'm interested in doing an insomnia rotation 😉

Good job...you submitted last Friday! Congratulations on being ahead of the game, Eowyne.

Yeah, well, I hope they don't look at the time submitted...just sent the six apps at 1:20am. When EXACTLY are we supposed to submit these time-consuming monsters?! We work during office hours!

I'm going to crack open a chilly one to celebrate and then pass out from exhaustion. What a day! Now, I'll be able to relax for 48 hours before I move on the Nov. 15 deadlines. 🙂

Congratulations on submitting, CheetahGirl! Enjoy your cold one 🙂

I had no idea before seeing your earlier post that anyone could see the time we submitted!

I still have a few to finish for Nov 1 - hopefully by tomorrow.

waiting on a letter writer..... 😵

my understanding is that you can submit even if the reference isn't uploaded (as long as it's designated appropriately) and that the letter will be included in the app once it's uploaded - anyone have any experience with this? I will probably hold-out for a bit longer because I have 4 writers and could pull a last-minute switcheroo if circumstance necessitates, but ugh.

Congrats to everyone who submitted! I'm also waiting on a letter writer.

Believe me. What time of day you submitted will not be any kind of deciding factor. Just get it through the gate and try not to do it at the very last minute as once the site is closed you will draw attention if you make a special case to try to get it submitted.

What do you mean once the site is closed? The site we are applying to? What time do they close it? End of business day? Thanks!

Siamesekitten, some of the internship program brochures say applications are due XX/XX/13 at 11:59pm. Check your specific sites' info.

Thanks, Docma..for your comment. I was worried that those sites may think I'm a late-night/early-morning freak before ever even meeting me (which I am, but I don't advertise it). The 4am yoga is just between me and you all (some of my fellow insomniacs).

Cheetah Girl - thank you. I have seen one brochure where it says "due on 11/1/13 at 11:59 PM", the others do not specify a time, so I am just assuming the deadline is 5:00 PM.

my rogue letter writer came through this morning, and I was just able to get all of my applications submitted yayyyyy. It does feel good to be done with this first piece, but damn this feels like a huge exercise in "hurry up and wait." good luck to everyone getting things finalized in the next couple of days!

One of my letter writers posted this morning, and the other responded to my email that they would be uploading in the next day or two! I learned last year that you can submit and they'll add the final letter after the fact, so I submitted so at least it's off my to-do list. Now we play the waiting game.

Hey, I just saw in another brochure that the deadline was 11/15/13 5:00pm EST...so make 5pm your cut-off if you can...just to be on the safe side. 😎

My materials are loaded and ready to go. Still waiting on my DCT who got my app weeks ago...

I'd say if it's been more than 2-3 weeks, and especially if deadlines are approaching, it wouldn't be out of line to send an email asking for a status update.

Thanks, I definitely will! And I'm on the East Coast, which makes it easier 🙂

Wait, so it is now $400 plus a match fee to apply to 15 sites? That seems a little excessive and unjustified these days. I also think it would be unethical to raise praises to deter applicants from applying to more sites than they should. Could not they just cap the number of times you can submit?

They raised the prices this year b/c they said the vendor they use (for all the webpages, formatting, etc) increased their prices...

Thanks for the info, as it is interesting but I don't buy that reason. If they get 70,000 apps like last year, that is over 1 million more in profit this year. Seems like a hefty increase by the vendor... But anyway, good luck to all applying this year!

$440 (plus the match fee) and 16 applications later... submission complete! Good luck y'all.

Applications submitted, here we go again!

Just submitted! It's exciting to think of the possibilities. Coast to coast baby!

Just noticed one of my sites wants me to put my match number on all materials. Is anybody else doing this? If so, where are you putting it? Thanks!

What about cover letters or supplemental materials, like reports? Thanks.
I meant to write CV - under contact info. I didn't have any sites wanting the # on supplementals, but if I did, I would create a Header and put in the upper right hand corner. And if you put on your cover letter, I would put under you name in the closing, like below. ...Oooo, why didn't I do that? Looks nice.

Sincerely,
Siamesekitten

Great idea! I just added my Match Number to my CV (under contact info) and in the header on the reports, and it looks nice. And I like your idea about putting the Match Number under my name on the cover letters. So, I was just going to do this for the one site that wants it, but I am thinking I might as well do this for all of my applications? What do you think? Thank you! 🙂

you can totally do this, but FYI, the way the appic application works, if you told appic your match#, it is at the top right of every single page the site gets from you, with the exception of your CV. but it is is already on every page of your cover letters/essay/etc.

I did give APPIC my match number, and the number does appear at the top right of all the pages like you said, but it is NOT showing up when I preview my essays or cover letters. All it says in the header is my name and essay, or my name and cover letter. Is your match # showing up in the header of your cover letters and essays?? Why is mine NOT showing up? Thanks!!

when i previewed my essays/cover letters on their own, it did not show up. however, once i designated the essays/cover letters as parts of sites and then looked at my application for that site (the 3osomething page pdf preview), the header had name/match # on the top of every page, including cover letter and essays... but not on top of my CV
