Can someone explain why this NRMP report lists 1,664 applicants to FM but only 1,398 matches? Did a few hundred people list FM as a backup but end up matching into a different specialty? There can't be that many FM applicants who didn't match.

All specialties have more applicants than matched candidates. It includes applicants who matched into different specialties, those who dropped out (ie, those who accepted a DO position or for some other reason) and those who were removed from the match (ie, those who didn't submit an ROL).

I think it's bc your typical SDN premed tends to be wound up a little more tightly than average, and uses it (usually in the wrong way) to decide which medical school to matriculate into. Most medical students (even SDNers) who've matched are out drinking and having a wonderful time (as they should), or are completely exhausted if they had to go through SOAP.

^^ what's funny is that premeds are likely the ones least equipped to interpret match lists. I've gone through med school already and even I have a hard time interpreting match results that are not in my field. It's more of something analyze for fun like sports statistics.

I had no idea what that was until a friend applying to NSG told me about it lol. Depending on the field there's a few places like that it seems like.

Lesson from this thread. Attend Wash U if you want to match, (but that shouldn't be too tough). Wash U is probably an unranked school somewhere not in the northeast.

is it just me, or has there been an increase in students from big name medical schools going into pathology the last 2 years?

The ones that I know who went into Pathology, loved learning basic sciences in the first 2 years and/or were MD/PhDs. This was augmented by learning Pathology with Goljan (or now Pathoma). They hated the daily, ridiculous BS of clinical medicine (can't blame them) during the MS-3 year. At that time, Radiology was quite competitive and Derm was/still is competitive. So Pathology is a pretty good compromise from a pay and lifestyle standpoint.
