for input on which interviews to cancel, and to help each other out by making interview cancellations known.
Cancelled UC Irvine today for November 24.

couple questions: is 12 still the magic number or would it be prudent to go a little higher this year since all feedback i've been getting is that IM is more competitive this year? and which ~2 would be the best to cancel from this list?

Tufts
Thomas Jefferson
Loyola
Rush
UIC
USC
Cedars-Sinai
Utah

Thanks for your input everyone!

Thanks for setting this up! Out of those I would cancel Utah and Loyola. From what I know I think UIC and Rush > Loyola and while I don't know much about Utah the other programs on that list are solid. I'm probably gonna rank between 12-15 for medicine

Thoughts on these programs - which to cancel? I'm interviewing at 6 not on this list, so I need to cut this list in half. I know a couple of these programs have a "reputation" that stands out among the others, but it's probably clear that I have a slight Midwest preference and I also want to live somewhere with a decent cost of living (hence why Ann Arbor is scaring me off). Possible career goal of heme/onc - particularly malignant heme. Thank you for any advice!

U of Kansas (Kansas City)
U of Minnesota
U of Colorado
Indiana U
Ohio State
U of Utah
Wake Forest
UNC
U of Michigan

I would keep Utah I heard good things about the program . I would go with USC /cedars/loyola.

Shibalady,
It sounds like you have already answered your own question. If you have a Midwest preference, then it makes sense to cut out UNC and Wake Forest. And if you want a decent cost of living, then eliminate Ann Arbor and Colorado. There's really no point interviewing at places you don't want to live, regardless of reputation.

8's the magic number or at least was last year

What's the latest you should cancel an interview? Is 2 weeks too late?

I think 2 weeks is the latest. In interview broker, it says less than 10 days and you should give notice to the PC so that's a good benchmark too. Ultimately, it's better to cancel even with a few days notice than attend an interview you are not interested in.

And 10 business days is 2 weeks...so there's that.

If we cancel on interview broker, should we also send an email to the school? What should we say?

Our dean said we don't have to since interview broker takes care of that part and a waitlisted applicant can pick up that spot.

But since it's polite, and takes all of 20 seconds to do so, send the damn email.

In that case, I would just say something along the lines of, "thank you for giving me the opportunity to interview with your program. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend my scheduled interview on x/x/xx. I have already cancelled the date in interview broker. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Too cool for your school

Any compelling reasons to interview at UC Davis or Thomas Jefferson? No geographical preference for Cali or Philly

UC Davis is a solid program . Our program director puts it at a low-mid tier university program, and is the target of many people who wish to end up in northern california but aren't competitive for Stanford/UCSF. Other than location I am not too sure.

If you have no other reason to be in those areas, I would say no. It looks like you have a lot of better places to go to and unless your UC Davis and TJ interviews coincide with other ones, it seems like it's a waste of money/time.

Cancelled UC Davis, USC, Cedars Sinai, Utah.

Hey guys, quick question- Between UCLA Olive view and UC irvine, which would you cancel?

People who rank 12 have a greater than 90% chance of matching. I'm hearing people who have 20 scheduled and it's infuriating. They are taking spots away from people who may truly want to go to a particular program. It's excessive. There is no way to feasibly go on 20 interviews.

A general thank you to everyone who has been and is being timely, proactive, and respectful about making decisions about programs they truly don't want to attend and notifying programs of their cancellations. Everyone, including interviewers and the other candidates, all appreciate this very much.

I totally get your frustration, but I don't think we should blame other applicants for this. Most of these programs will fill before SOAP, and the remaining will fill during SOAP, which tells us that in most cases, people aren't losing out on opportunities just because others are holding on to their interviews. Programs usually have a pretty good sense of how many applicants they need to interview, and they understand that there are people who hold on to multiple invites, so they have all adjusted accordingly. I think for those people who are holding on to 15+ or 20+ interviews, they're essentially buying an extra bit of security in exchange for the money/time required to go on the interview. That's their prerogative and they've earned it with the hard work that they put into their applications.

That said, if you don't think you want to go on a particular interview, you should drop it just so you're not wasting anyone's time and the programs will have a better idea of what to expect. Maybe someone else will get that interview, or maybe not.

Cancelled Robert woods last week for this Thursday. Cancelled Georgetown for 12/16

Please advise. A big scheduling conflict (not interview-related) has arisen with my Tufts interview date, and I am considering rescheduling v canceling. I'm very happy with the other interviews I have received (12 + Tufts), and one exciting waitlist.

So far plan to be interviewing at UVA, MSSM, Pitt, Dartmouth, NYU, Wisconsin, Yale, Emory, Colorado, Brown, Miami, Montefiore, (Tufts).

Do you think I would be missing out or otherwise making a poor decision by not considering Tufts? Can anyone comment on the strengths/weaknesses of this program given what I'm looking for (see below)?

A little background:
I'm looking for excellent, well-rounded training at a strong academic medical center, with a great community/supportive environment. Program "fit" and how I jive with people there matters a TON, and I already have this as a very compelling option at my home institution (one of the above). Want to subspecialize in the future, maybe ID or Rheum, possibly +med ed focus. Not really planning to split hairs on any programs' particular strengths in these fields or their fellowship matches, unless something really stands out.

Prefer to work hard but don't think break-you-in-grueling is the best for my learning. Hoping the other residents and the tone of the program will be at least a little nerdy and cool. Despite the appearance of my list, not really geographically-limited, and mainly would love somewhere with a few things to do plus some nature, and not too much time spent commuting.

TL;DR: Cancel Tufts?

If I were you, I'd make this decision based on how much you think you'd want to be in Boston. In terms of clinical training I don't think tufts offers anything that the other programs wouldn't, in terms of rep I'd put it below quite a few of them, so really the only thing it offers you is its location in Boston, which is pretty sweet

Hey guys canceling GW today in 5-10 minutes. 12/7/15 slot.

are most of you just canceling interviews via email and asking for confirmation? thanks!

for anyone that has BIDMC and is not interested/wont rank them highly.. please consider cancelling 🙂 it would help me out more than anything.

good luck to everyone!

I haven't had to specifically ask for confirmation yet. All the programs I have canceled that don't use an interview broker type system, the program coordinator has e-mailed me back directly confirming. Some of them that use interview broker didn't send me back a confirmation e-mail (still shot the PC an e-mail), but they know because of interview broker.

Cancelled Maryland (12/15) Georgetown (12/15) GW (12/16) and UVA (12/17). Good luck to everyone

Cancelled Rush (1/12) and USC (1/21). Best of luck!
