Question: I still have not heard from 20 out of the 30 or so programs I applied to back in September. Is anyone else in the same boat? Most of my friends at school in other specialities and have received either a yes or a no by now. I am starting to wonder if ERAS somehow didn't transmit all my applications. Are other people experiencing this? I asked my program what to do and they say just to be patient. Wanted to see if I am going crazy or if this is an IM thing. Appreciate any thoughts / advice!

Quite possible. You may still be in their pool of possible candidates if they have dates left or anticipate people cancelling. Once they reject you, there is no turning back. So they idle, unfortunately. I heard back from about half of the programs I applied to (either positive or negative). It's hard to say if the rest are silent rejections or not, but based on what is posted here, some are keeping me in the loop.

Last week I sent emails to two places I was particularly interested in, illustrating a strong geographical connection that was not immediately obvious in my app, stating my interest, and that I would be in the area. Both seemed swamped, gave replies that sounded like chiding for contacting them outside of ERAS, and I think if anything, may have hurt my application chances by being irritating. I would not recommend this strategy going forward.

Alternately, a friend sent substantive updates regarding multiple publications, and received replies that these would be considered (unsure if they've resulted in any decisions). These may (questionably) be helpful types of updates, if they are truly substantive. Probably +/-. Certainly less irritating than mere interest/in the area emails.

I would consider updating if (IFF) there were some significant great thing I had to say; otherwise, it seems places are swamped and your app would be best standing on its own, without further pestering.

Just a different take... I emailed three programs last week stating interest and giving reasons why I liked the program. One emailed me back saying "We're still looking at apps." One emailed me back saying "We've noted your interest and will forward it to the intern selection committee" and I got an interview 2 days later. One did not email me back at all but I received an interview invitation the next day. These were all relatively respectable university programs.

Not to say OP is wrong; I'm sure all programs do it differently. But emailing absolutely can help you, and don't be afraid to do it.

You must have posted this just as I was typing my post! That's very refreshing to hear! I guess it just depends on each program. I agree with you, and still think emailing is worth a try.

Yeah, unfortunately, there's no hard and fast rule with these emails. It seems like sometimes it works in your favor or sometimes it doesn't.

I sent an interest email to a competitive program a few weeks ago, and it worked out. The program had already sent out invites, so I decided I would rather email them now before possibly getting rejected vs. wait and then regret getting a rejection without having sent them an email at all. The program director ended up reaching out to me a few days later with an invite. The following day, that program then started sending out rejections, so yeah, was I glad that I emailed!

Some of my friends have had more mixed results, but overall, I feel like it can only help.

Yeah definitely mixed results here. If you think they might not be choosing you just because of location, there's a higher chance they will invite you. I e-mailed two places like this showing I have ties to the city/region and I got interviews. The other two programs I e-mailed no such luck. Who knows maybe I ruined my chances with them too...they weren't places completely out of my league.

I've been emailing the Program Coordinator, but address my email to both the PD and Coordinator. I figure that way, it'll be less intrusive than emailing the PD directly, and the Coordinator can forward it to the PD (at least, I would hope that they would...)

In terms of letters of interest, I ended up sending emails to email addresses of program coordinators I found on the websites and haven't heard back. I didn't realize that ERAS had contact emails. I am wondering if I should resend the email to the email address on ERAS? I don't want to bombard them with email that they may have already received...

Has anyone had ANY luck with sending interest emails this cycle? From previous years, it seems that a number of people had success with this strategy, but who knows with this cycle. Like buonassezia, I also sent interest emails last week to two places I'm genuinely interested in and am competitive at stat-wise, but haven't heard anything back from either. The general impression I'm getting is that places are just unusually swamped with applications this year. Hope someone has luck with emailing programs!

Yes. I got an e-mail 5 hours after sending an e-mail of interest to a program. I had a very clear reason that I would be interested, including family ties to the area. It was a program in the top 30-40 range (don't want to give the name of the program so people don't start inundating them).

I've also had luck getting interviews my partner (applying in pediatrics) got before me by sending e-mails. We've been pretty aggressive.

So, interestingly, the PC seemed to not remember that I had sent an email, and said even if they had seen it, they get a lot of emails and don't keep them if they are just about expressing interest. She didn't have my email in her inbox. They said ultimately it's up to the PD as to who will get an interview, and by us applying to the program, that was enough to show that we had interest. Not sure what to make of that...probably not going to pursue that program any longer.

That being said, she did ask if I sent it through ERAS, so I would say maybe it's better to send those emails of interest through ERAS rather than to the coordinator's email.

Oh no I meant that I'm not going to pester them anymore with emails of interest, actively pursue trying to get an interview, etc. I am well aware of all of the possible reasons and never took any of it personally. If I get an interview there later, cool. If not, that's life and it's just the name of the game. Sorry for the confusing phrasing.

Dude...enough. If you fail the boards, that's on you, not your program. Just because it's an easy thing to measure doesn't mean it's a valuable metric to use to judge programs.

Board pass rate is the Press-Ganey score of residencies. Easily measured, statistically irrelevant.
