Tough tough year for OB/GYN. Holy cow. Essentially everything filled in the regular match. Heard from so many programs how competitive this year was. I matched further down my list than I ever thought I would and know others who were surprised. Still happy about my program but definitely not my top pick. Hope everyone here found somewhere to go with people you will be happy with.

I was looking at the Report from R3. I didn't see any unmatched spot, although I might have missed it. I matched half way down my list. It was brutal.

Interesting. It seems like OB has gotten much more competitive over the last 5-10 years. I'm not exactly sure why though. Reimbursement isn't the greatest although it can't get much lower. Malpractice is still ridiculous in certain areas. The calls can be brutal even as an attending.

Oh well. Good luck with residency

Yeah, you all are not the only ones shocked when opening their envelopes. I went further down my list than I EVER thought I would. I'm still shocked and disappointed, but trying to make the best of everything. It seems this was an absolutely brutal year for OBGYN. Very few people I know got what they wanted for OB.

Ditto all this. I matched very far down my list. I am heartbroken.

Hey, I'm really sorry to hear that. I remembered when you did well on step 1 while taking care of your kids. I've been rooting for you this whole time. Hope you do well at your program

Certainly seemed to be a very competitive year for OB. We were fortunate enough to match at our #1 choice but didn't get interviews at a lot of places we would have really liked to check out.

Current 3rd year considering applying OB/GYN.

Would any of you mind elaborating?
How far down the list you got? 5? 10?
Also, if you don't mind sharing the highlights of your application and what was missing/could have been improved on to match better?

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

OBGYN has gotten more competitive for the past 5 years or so. In addition to the number of very strong applications, there were more applicants this year. My program received 150 more applications than last year. I had over 700 for seven spots. I also noticed an increase in medical schools. There are not enough spots for the number of students applying. Unless there is increased funding for additional GME spots and programs can get approved for additional residents, I think this will become a trend. I don't think this is just for OBGYN but all specialties.

Definitely OBGYN has been trending upward since 2007/2008. The match for 2015 was 100% filled for PGY1 OBGYN position. There were a few pre-lim spots that didn't fill.

I have to agree with residencycoord as well, there are more medical schools and more applicants than spots. This trend is in all speciality, however why is OBGYN so popular these last 5-10 years?

Perhaps maybe the fellowship opportunities and/or new technology and developments which spark interest of eager medical student. Female pelvic reconstructive surgery medicine has a board certification now. I remember when I was applying for residency, such thing did not exist. Also emerging in the last 10 years or so was MIGS. Even though there is no board certification for that specific fellowship, a lot of residents and physicians are going back for additional training in MIGS. This couple with new technology and development with laparoscopic and robotic surgeries.

Despite the hours of obstetrics, these additional surgical enhancement opens up more opportunities for residents.
