Hey everyone, just wanted to create a thread so that folks can post their interview invites and dates. Let's get this interview season rolling!

Thanks for getting this started! I think we should try to keep it the same format as previous years by listing all the dates offered by each program so its easier for us to schedule once more programs are out:

9/19 - UAMS: 10/11, 11/1, 12/6, 1/24

9/19 - UAMS: 10/11, 11/1, 12/6, 1/24
9/27 - NYU: 11/1, 12/13

Am I safe to interview at 10 of these and call it a day?

Short answer: no

Vascular PGY3 here. you have to judge based on your scores, letters, and how well you generally do in interviews. Safe number for an applicant is 15. Remember that programs have generally one spot per year, therefore, you can drop in rank-list like a rock if you don't match in a given program. High number of interviews my year was 33 - i look 16. Also, factor in programs that withdraw (2 my year) and interviews that you miss due to canceled and delayed flights (2 for me). So when it was all done, I only had 12 interviews.

This is a major decision in your life. Don't let anyone minimize it. Majority of graduates practice within the region that they trained. Don't let laziness or lack of money (take loans if needed) deter from your interview process.

Thank you very much for the thoughtful response. I will go on more then - I had looked at the "Charting Outcomes" from 2014 and saw that after 10, you were at the point of absolute minimal returns, as the probability of matching was 1.0. How do we know its 15 now? Thanks again for your insight - very helpful stuff!

You got confidence intervals and/or p-values on that?

You can't apply population level data to the individual. Especially when your dataset is small, and you lack complete information about the cohort.

All of what you said is definitely correct, but this is why I am asking how many programs to interview at because so far, I haven't come across a finite answer on how many programs I should interview at. Thank you for weighing in!

It's anecdotal from interviewing myself, speaking with the interviewees over the last several years, and being involved in the matching process at my institution in the same period. There's a general consensus among the applicants and program directors and accepting 15 seems to be the safe magic number for a slightly above-average applicant (eg. 245 step1, 1-2 pubs, top quartile of class, etc). Not going to get better stats than that unfortunately.

I wouldn't take any less than that myself and I had higher quantifiables that I previously cited. Remember that 15 interviews only gives you opportunity to match at 15-18 positions and theres ALWAYS students who have better applications.

As southern surgeon said, you cant extrapolate yourself to the population. You likely will match in spots 1-10 as the charting outcomes states - but the extra interviews protect yourself in case you are the outlier.

Would anyone interviewing at Rutgers on 1/11 or 11/16 be willing to swap for 12/7? These invites are so hard to come by and I'm currently missing out because of a conflict with dates. Someone help me, please 🙁

Hey Batfish,

I'm scheduled for 1/11 right now, and willing to swap! If you want to contact Rutgers and CC me to the email explaining the switch, that'd be great!
