Question regarding waitlisting vs scheduling. Is there any harm in waitlisting a desired date rather than just accepting a date that would be less ideal?

The harm would be not getting off the waitlist and then not being able to interview at all. If you are using Interview Broker, you should be able to schedule a date and then separately waitlist more desirable dates. Better safe than sorry, in my opinion!

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I didn't even apply to that many programs! Just withdrew from 13 programs yesterday to allow other great applicants to have their chance. With that many programs, those people should know which programs they are actually interested in and which were their backups. Let the backups go, they are obviously strong candidates!

Yea, I tried to convince them to cancel a bunch, but it seemed like they would hold on until the last minute, which is just terrible. I've been fortunate enough to get a fair number of invites, but also cancelled them basically right away.

That's not the type of behavior I would want in a co-resident. I was told that canceling an interview 3 weeks out was pushing it as far as courtesy, so what they are doing is exceedingly rude. You can't have the "gotta look out for only me" mentality in emergency medicine. Hopefully you talked some sense into them and they ended up going home and canceling the 25 excess interviews.

Honestly 15 interviews is just fine for most applicants.

Its when you start going on 16, 17, 18, or more that it begins to get ridiculous.

If folks are holding onto >15 spots I think they really should cancel. I feel very fortunate to have 10 programs booked right now but some of those are at the bottom of my list. I am just waiting to cancel my applications to >10 schools and then start cancelling interviews... which will lubribate this preposterous example of a collective action failure in an information-deprived market.

There is simply no way to put one's best foot forward that >15 times so those who are holding so many spots may as well do the soul searching now, print a certificate of how may programs offered you an interview for that spot on your wall between your MD and your Boarded Certificate and let the love shine in.

Somehow I doubt they are on this thread though...

One other thing I would like to suggest is that I think programs should be more transparent about who they invite for interviews and then match with (or maybe a brilliant student/resident could compile this information with anonymous surveys... presuming everyone answered their survey honestly). I am a solid candidate from a solid school and was told to apply to >60 programs! Some of these are unrealistic reaches and some are serious backstop residencies. If each applicant knew where he/she stood with regard to each program we could apply to 20 reasonable programs, a couple reaches and a few back ups and call it a day. PDs would have a sane number of applications to read and we could all save money on application fees, flight cancellations and xanax.

I got an interview offer from NYP but haven't heard from NYU or Sinai. Based on this thread, it seems like NYC programs have sent a few invites/none at all.

Some of the rationale for holding onto >15 spots may be fear of losing safety programs. First, congrats on getting so many interview spots! Second, it won't be financially or emotionally easy to go on that many interviews, and if you dig deep, you probably have a good idea of 5-10 places you're really interested in.

Someone I found to be helpful was my clerkship director. I emailed them a list of my scheduled interviews, grouped into "Yes, OMG" and "Meh", and asked them to help me select a few to cancel, with the caveat that my main fear was losing safeties and somehow not matching. They talked some sense into me, gave me an adjusted view of my 'rank' based on where I got interviews, and ended up really helping me cancel the ones I knew I didn't actually want to go to.
