Hey all, as we near the completion of interview offers and beginning of most of the interview process I wanted to ask how many interviews people are going on? I have many more offers than I can probably go to (I applied to too many), and am not sure how many is reasonable and what is overkill. Thanks!

I also applied to too many in retrospect, but I will likely try to go on 10-15. In asking a friend who applied last year, that appeared average (although you always run into the person who has gone on 25 interviews). I’m just now sure how a surgical resident manages to take the time off to go to any more than that.

I’ve heard of some people going on 5 or 6, but I’m not that gutsy.

I'm in the same boat. Thinking 10-15. Overall, I think it depends on the applicant's strength. In the end, you do what you can to increase the odds... If that means 25 interviews, then so be it. I wouldn't do only 5.

I'm planning on going on 15ish ... but regarding "completion of interview offers" ...anyone else waiting on yes/no from a lot of programs? I have at least 12 programs that I have yet to hear from? Anyone else have applications stuck in purgatory,

Thank you guys for your input, I also think 15 is the sweet spot, and what is reasonable as a surgery resident in terms of time off. Here is who I am waiting to hear from:
Higher on my list:
Indiana
UCSD
Washington
BWH
Cornell
MGH
Penn
Mt Sinai
Wash U
Stanford
Duke
Newark Beth Israel

The rest:
UF
Tufts
U of Iowa
Kentucky
Maryland
Vidant
Wake
Hofstra

Not sure if any of you have heard from these programs yet.

UCSD - sent invite for March 22. There was a repeat call from them to maybe change it to the week before
BWH - sent out three letters saying they would have rejections or interview offers out by the end of this month. I haven't heard anything yet
Stanford send out an email asking to clarify if I was cardiac or thoracic track (am cardiac), haven't heard back.

Yeah I got those same emails, hadn't heard about UCSD though

Not yet, only 'we're reviewing or about to review' application emails though from Cornell, BWH, Newark BI.

Has anyone started interviews yet?

Has anyone contacted programs regarding why they werent offered an interview? If so, wondering what approach you took

The chairman said they are holding someone back
Ah thats a shame, I really liked Kentucky's general surgery program back in the day and at least a few folks I've talked to who applied in the last few years seemed to really like Kentucky's thoracic residency when they interviewed.

Agreed, I liked it when I interviewed there for I6 back in the day, and the chairman is so personable, Fingerscrossed - so far I’ve just called places that haven’t sent out emails as far as I can tell, mostly they just said they are still reviewing, I did contact one that had sent out emails, but they told me the same. Not sure that they’re going to be forthcoming

Also Oschner might be interviewing on 3/20. I told them I had schedule conflicts with their two dates and they asked if I was available 3/20 but I don’t have confirmation yet that they will actually be adding that date.

Did anyone hear how many applicants total this year, out of curiosity?

I havent heard anything from many places. What would you recommend doing at this point. Seems like interviews have been sent out. Should I call or email programs to get an update and what should i say or write to them?

It wouldn’t hurt to call the coordinators to see if invites are still being sent out. A few places do seem to send them out in waves and may start sending more out if people start canceling their interviews.

Edit: That said, I guess places are now sending out rejections too

Does anyone know about the state of Texas Heart as a training program? If you have interviewed there, what was it like? Any advice will be appreciated.

The training program is massive, it takes 4 fellows each, has 4 training hospitals and has probably 20 attendings, so I think the training is still solid, I think the biggest issue is the loss of cms support for transplant, I’m not sure when it will get that back, so I think if you are interested in heart transplant (they still do lung) that would probably be the biggest negative. They said they were hoping to get it back as soon as possible, but not sure of the timing

Thanks a lot! Gives me perspective. I am interviewing there soon

Any insight into the boston programs for cardiac? MGH seems to be the most solid. Tufts seems to have taken attendings from BWH and is heavy in transplant but what else? How does BWH sustain so many fellows between the traditional on top of the I6 and also the 4+3?

For BWH I don't think the I6 is very old - maybe a few years, but not sure about the rest

Has anybody heard from Mt. Sinai? I called/emailed, and they gave me very cagey responses about how they were still reviewing applications

Congrats everyone! Hope to see y'all at STS or AATS in the coming year

Thank you for starting the thread, it was awesome to meet you guys on the trail
