2019 Doctoral Public Health (PhD, DrPH, ScD) Application/Results

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm applying. From east to west: Harvard, Brown, Yale, Pittsburgh, Michigan, and Minnesota. They are all for PhD programs in the equivalent of behavioral health sciences except for Minnesota which is for social epidemiology.

I'm hoping to send my applications in the next couple of weeks. Still refining my statements and waiting on a couple rec letters.

Just submitted applications on Friday! Applying infectious disease epidemiology PhD to WAY too many places (due to extenuating circumstances- otherwise would have happily applied to 4-5 programs)- UW, Berkeley, Minnesota, Michigan, Tulane, Emory, JHU, BU, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, UNC. Now just waiting... 🙂

I'm apply to Hopkins DrPH only. Everything is in except one recommendation and I still have to take the GRE! I'm working in a country that doesn't offer the GRE and won't be able to take it until I get back to the states next week. Dreading it.

Anyone been invited for interviews? I only applied for a PhD at Johns Hopkins. After reading the stats and experience levels of people who got turned down last year, I’m not hopeful, but we will see!

I read a lot of last year's GradCafe thread, and it seems like it's pretty rare for PhD applicants to be contacted before winter break. Also, it seems like not all schools do interviews, and not all schools that do interviews do them for every accepted candidate (ie., some are accepted on application only). I know nothing about the process at Hopkins so, so sorry if this is totally irrelevant/unhelpful.

Submitted applications on 11/13. My anxiety is getting the better of me, so... I decided to follow some threads. Good luck to everyone applying! Top 2 Programs are UTHealth - Houston and Colorado School of Public Health. Mainly due to potential mentor matches and research interests!

I doubt anyone cares, but just in case someone also applied to UTHealth, I've already interviewed and received acceptance.

I'll add my info to the mix! I applied end of November to all of my schools:
- UCLA (phd epidemiology)
- UC Irvine (phd public health - global health)
- UC Davis (phd epidemiology)
- UC San Diego/San Diego State (phd epidemiology)
- University of Washington (phd environmental and occupational hygiene)
...obviously I want to stay on the West Coast!

I heard from a professor at Univ. of Washington (one I didn't speak with before applying) last week that my application "stood out" and he would like to have a phone call with me, so I'm hoping that's a good sign! Other than that, I haven't heard back from any others and don't really expect to until February or so. I had major troubles with my UCLA applications (which I read on GradCafe is pretty common, so I'm not expecting much there)

Hi! Has anyone else heard from anywhere re:interviews?

Not yet, but I'm not sure if any of the schools I applied to really do interviews. I know that varies by school! I keep checking gradcafe and no one else is reporting receiving interview invites for my schools yet, at least.

Same.

Hi! Has anyone else heard from anywhere re:interviews?

I haven't heard anything. I applied to one epi program and 5 social/behavioral programs.

The results page of Gradcafe is a good resource if you haven't seen it yet. It looks like some epi and biostat programs have started sending out interview invitations, but definitely not all schools. I haven't seen any health services/policy posts or social/behavioral posts yet, and just a few other programs (Hopkins Repro/Family).

I got an "official interview" invitation from University of Washington yesterday for their PhD in Environmental and Occupational Hygiene program. My friend applied to their PhD in Epidemiology and got an acceptance email two days ago - no interview.

I have received interview invitations from Brown SBS, Michigan HBHE, and Yale SBS.

I was notified that I've passed the first round of admissions at Minnesota (applied for epi) and that full acceptance is contingent upon finding an advisor and funding, which is a process that takes several weeks on their end.

I've heard nothing from Pittsburgh (BCHS) or Harvard (PHS-SBS).

My weekly update:

The good:
- Semi-official acceptance from Michigan HBHE (interviewed; got an email from the committee will receive official acceptance letter with funding details this week!)

The bad:
- Official rejection from Harvard SBS (didn't get an interview either)

The nerve-wracking:
- Good vibes from Brown (I suspect decisions for SBS will be released this week)
- Had a phone interview with Pitt BCHS, got positive feedback but no official decision
- Heading to New Haven toady for Yale's interview day tomorrow!

Hello all!
Any Updates? We are getting closer to the day! Does anyone know if Columbia Mailman School of Public Health DrPH conducts interviews?

Here's where I am:

Brown BSHS: In
Michigan HBHE: In
Pitt BCHS: In
Harvard SBS: Rejected
Yale SBS: Interviewed, awaiting decision (suspect I'm waitlisted)
Minnesota: Silence since passing first step in January

April 15 can't come soon enough.

Here's mine:

Accepted: UW (going this week to visit/interviewing for funding), Tulane (full funding for 2 years).
Waiting on: Michigan (interviewed in January), Columbia (interviewed 2 weeks ago), UNC, and Berkeley (no interview- was told acceptances were beginning to be sent out and everyone would hear by the end of the month. Not feeling positive about this one.)
Rejected: Harvard, JHU, BU, Yale (haven't officially heard back on Yale but not invited to visit day so I assumed that's a no).

Weird in between: Passed first step at UMinn in January, reached out and they let me know they've identified an advisor who would like to work with me, just confirming funding- I should get an official offer this week or next.

Receive rejection from Harvard Drph.. not surprised, since I did not get an interview invite. I got an email to check the portal and there it was. I hope everyone else gets some good news!

Phone interviews with BU and Hopkins - Accepted at Hopkins IH Department!
Hi RH2011! Congratulations on your acceptance - could you please share which program within IH you applied to? I applied to GDEC/IH and interviewed back in January, still have not heard back. Thank you!

Here are my updates:

Accepted:
UW - received a training grant for 2 years (tuition, health insurance, stipend) and funding through TA the 3rd year; 4th year funding would be up to me
UC Irvine - Full funding for 5 years not tied to a TA or RA (tuition, health insurance, stipend)
UC San Diego - Tuition remission and health insurance, but no stipend or TA/RA guaranteed
Waitlisted: None
Rejected:
UCLA - They took over a month to reconcile my two applications (the grad one was "missing") so I didn't have much hope to begin with
Still Waiting.... UC Davis. They are taking forever and I haven't heard a peep. They had the latest deadline (priority was January 15th and normal March 1st) but still! It's getting to be a little ridiculous.

Congrats to everyone on the amazing achievements!!!
