Let's begin the thread for the event coming up on Friday, March 15. As a Program Director, this is one of the most fun days of my year. It is always great to participate in finding out of where the next stage of the careers of my students will be happening...

Here are the prior years' residency match threads:
2018 MD/PhD Residency Match
2017 MD/PhD Residency Match
2016 MD/PhD Residency Match
2015 MD/PhD Residency Match

may be my faulty memory, but there seem to be a lot more pathology people this year than usual (at least on the lists here..)

Path is great, although I might be a little biased ;-)

I think it fits the physician scientist role to the T, and with digital pathology on the horizon + the cutting edge stuff in molecular pathology it should be a really stimulating field.

As a surgeon, I find it curious that the surgical sub specialties aren’t too well represented this year, compared to prior years.

As a surgeon, I find it curious that the surgical sub specialties aren’t too well represented this year, compared to prior years.

One year is too small to see if this is a real trend or just a blip.

... but let me speculate.... Perhaps, the release of the 2013-2014 MD/PhD survey data report has started making an impact. The residents that matched this year were still in graduate school at that time, and many of them had not yet formed a more definitive picture of their specialty. For most MD/PhD students, the last year of PhD is the year of greatest maturing professionally and intellectually. It is during that year, when many students begin forming more firm ideas of specialty. While one can argue that 2017 and/or 2018 should show the some of the effects, the releases of data to the community has been slower. While PDs have been receiving annual updates since 2014 about this cohort study data, the report was published until April 2018. The ACGME report has also been improving their reporting of the density and success rate of MD/PhD trainees since 2016. Prior to that there were limited data sources of statistics for MD/PhD trainees regarding these outcomes.
