Hi all,

I wanted some clarification on the ADEA traffic rules. I've been reading a lot of threads about this but am still a little confused, unfortunately.

As I understand it, a student can pay deposits at multiple schools and therefore hold multiple seats up until MARCH 1ST. At this point, the schools will release information to ADEA about which students are holding multiple seats to all schools, and the schools then have the right to rescind their offers based on this information. Therefore, students should only be holding one seat by March 1st.

Here is what I am confused about:
1) Let's say a student has multiple acceptances - one from School A and one from School B - and paid the first deposit for both schools. Then, they decide to attend School A and withdraw their seat from School B before March 1st. Could School A still rescind their offer even though they are no longer holding the additional seat at School B by the traffic deadline? This confusion is stemming from the fact that deposit information is released in addition to whether you are actively holding the seat.

2) I have seen that the schools are required to give you 15 days notice if they rescind your offer - does this mean you would have 15 days to pick one school and withdraw from all others to retain your seat, or that the school could completely rescind the offer and it would just become official after 15 days? Or could it be either one based on the school itself? I am not at all planning to wait for this to happen to withdraw my seat, I just saw it mentioned a few times and thought the clarification might be helpful to other applicants.

People all the time put deposits down for 2 different schools, pick 1 and drop the other, and continue on their merry way. What I'm saying is: No, School A will not rescind their offer because you had previously put a deposit down for School B.

You're overthinking this. Pick a school (I'll make it easy for you - choose the cheapest!) and tell them you're going. Withdraw yourself from School B and open that spot up for someone who is on the waitlist and desperately wants to get in.

I thought they release info on April the 5th!

You are overthinking man. I’m pretty sure they send you emails asking to confirm what school you will be going to. They don’t just send you a rejection and take your money without warning.....hopefully lol

You didn’t read the fine print on your application before you signed your name then

Applicants Holding Positions at Multiple Institutions. Starting April 1, dental schools report to ADEA AADSAS the names and identification numbers of candidates who have paid a deposit, hold a position in a dental school entering class, or both. After April 5, ADEA AADSAS reports to each institution the names of candidates for its entering class who hold acceptance(s) at additional institutions. A dental school may rescind an offer of admission to a candidate who has paid deposits to or holds positions at multiple institutions. If the dental school chooses to withdraw this candidate from the entering class, the dental school must give the candidate a minimum 15-day notice.

That was what I read here. Maybe they changed it for this year.

This document was for the 2011-2012 cycle...we're at the end of the 2018-2019 cycle....things have heavily changed in 7 years (ie early/soft opening in May, new application system, two academic update periods, etc). These are the new and latest guidelines, which were revised in March 2018: ADEA Guidelines for Dental Schools When Extending Offers of Admission

March 1st is when the schools report the names of the people that have paid deposits to AADSAS. March 5th is when AADSAS tells each school where else their candidates are holding seats.

Onto your questions, which I'm answering to the best of my ability:
1) If you withdraw your seat at School B before March 1st, I don't believe School A would rescind their offer as you are no longer part of School B's entering class- that's forfeited when you withdraw, obviously. I think your confusion is perhaps coming from not clearly understanding the difference between what happens on March 1st vs. March 5th..?
2) The only thing I've heard regarding 15 days is that if you are accepted to a school on or after February 1st, then you have only 15 days to accept the offer (as opposed to 30 days). After 15 days, the offer will be rescinded (so you have 15 days to say yes (ie pay a deposit) or no to that school).

Hope that helps.

You know that sucks, I have schools that I am still interviewing at and I will probably hear from on March 1st or after that.

So now they will know, I have put deposits on a school and they will say oh you know what, why give her a spot, she already paid somewhere else!

I feel these rules favor people who applied early as if they are not already favored enough!

But what about the ones who applied late, "screw them, serve them right" mentality!

"Dental schools participating in ADEA AADSAS will report to ADEA AADSAS by March 1 the names of candidates who hold a position in their entering class. After March 5, ADEA AADSAS will report to each institution the names of candidates in their entering class who are holding acceptance(s) at additional institutions. Dental schools with candidates holding multiple positions on March 1 of the year of admission will give such candidates a minimum fifteen-day notice if they choose to withdraw the candidate from the entering class."

Straight from the site. Seems pretty straight forward

I don't think it works that way. If the school likes you, they would want to fight to get you and offer you a spot. I would say many people receive multiple offers and schools know that. I wouldn't worry, just focus on being the best applicant you can be.

I hope so. Thanks a lot.

@princeafrica so kindly pointed out that schools do give you a 15 day notice from March 1st if they're going to rescind your offer (so they're going to withdraw your offer on March 15th), so while what I said in this quote above is true, it's not really applicable to what your question was asking. I didn't read that far ahead in the link I myself posted 😛
