Well, finally something to look forward to, embrace in competition and pride after much delay from the pandemic
Mostly looking forward to track and field, gymnastics, and football of course...(Germany vs. Brazil?)

Will be very surprised if they don't shut it down due to covid.

I feel sorry for tokyo. They are going to lose a lot of money on this. They want to cancel it but the IOC won't let them. I am glad that chicago didn't get it in 2016. IOC is all corrupt dinguses.

They should have treated covid like a war and skipped it til 2024

It’s kind of sad watching…like, it’s missing that spark of the crowd.

I hope the 2030 games go to Sapporo.

Another waste of stadiums and facilities. They need to choose a permanent location instead of building new sites every 4 years.

There prob won't even be a "global" Olympics by 2050. Prob just confined to global north

I personally think the Olympics should be discontinued, because they are a concept whose time has come and long since gone. There are the Commonwealth Games, the Pan-American Games, other international competitions, and they still have the Gay Games if one is wired that way.

I'm a bit disappointed that I missed Turner Classic Movies' showing of Olympic films going as far back as 1912. They did not show Leni Riefenstahl's beautifully shot 1936 propaganda piece "Olympia," however.

The only part of the Olympics that interests me is the Parade of Nations, because I think it's kind of cool to see the countries enter the stadium in the alphabetical order of the host nation's main language.

I do agree the waste is ridiculous - I am not sure if one location is the answer, but I think only cities that have the current infrastructure should host- there are several global cities that could host it without building tons of new arenas - use a local college as the olympic village, and there you go.

That’s a weak argument especially since we’re in a pandemic.

"Even if Tokyo did want to back out of the Olympics, legally, it can't, according to Yoshihisa Hayakawa, an international law specialist and partner with the firm Uryu & Itoga."

"If Tokyo stepped away from the contract it signed in 2013, Hayakawa said, "it is regarded as the default of contract obligation," potentially exposing Tokyo, and ultimately the Japanese taxpayer, to "gigantic damages."

Same article

But given the potential reputational damage of pursuing an "IOC v Japan" lawsuit in Swiss courts, Zimbalist said it was incredibly unlikely the IOC would bring any legal action if, for instance, a resurgence of COVID-19 infections were to force Japan to walk away.

"What are you doing? Suing the Japanese? They've done everything they could. They've spent $35 billion. They went ahead with the postponement. They said, 'That's okay,' even though that cost them another $3 billion more, and now you're going to sue them? So, I think that certainly the IOC would have the legal right to do that, but whether they would do it or not is another question."

If the U.S., China, or Russia were in the same position, they all would say "get nuked" (metaphorically).

Maybe china and russia but not sure about the US. we became real pussys when trump became president.

Given the state of mask mandates and vaccination rates in the US I am left wondering why anyone thinks the US wouldn’t go ahead with hosting the Olympics if the situation were reversed. Of course we would.

Foreigns bad

Considering the amount of corruption that the Japanese government used to get the games, I'm delighted that they lost their shirts in this. This isn't the Cold War, We really shouldn't be bidding for these games. Also, Japanese have been bad hosts notwithstanding COVID right now, which is a loss of prestige.

If we had it in the US, I don't care how infected we would be, we would take a page out of Brazil and let the games go on at their risk. Irresponsible, but when has that ever stopped Athletes sacrificing themselves for our entertainment?

Winter Olympics > Summer Olympics.
I love the pure speed of the winter olympics - literally half the sports, one wrong move and bam - no beuno. I honestly think if I participated in half of the events, I would end up in the hospital or morgue before the end of one run.

I agree. They refused to let a blind/deaf Paralympic athlete bring a caregiver. They refused to let breastfeeding mothers (at least 3 athletes with babies under 1 year of age affected,) bring their babies. Then when they got bad publicity about the breastfeeding babies, they semi-backed down and said they would let the babies + a caretaker for them into the country, but they couldn't go anywhere near the Olympic village.

I get they want to minimize people coming into the country. But there is on reason they can't make reasonable exceptions for Paralympic athletes and breasfeeding babies.

Curling ftw

But seriously, looking forward to the Los Angeles 2028 games. Facilities pretty much already built, even an old fart like Memorial Colosseum gets to see its 3rd Olympic Games…talk about getting your $$ worth out of that place.

I think Pauley Pavilion gets reused, too…Mary Lou Retton got her gold in that building.

True story. My fraternity put together a curling team and showed up at a national tournament. They had a coach give them a lesson. My buddy skipped and got a concussion before the competition even started.

Curling exists in the Olympics solely to keep Canada happy, just like baseball exists in the Olympics solely to keep the US happy. Baseball is a real sport, but nobody plays it except in the US (and the 1 Canada team that plays against US teams!) Curling....I have a hard time calling that a sport, but back before modern times, during the freezing cold times, I suppose curling would have seemed like a lot of fun.

Baseball being only popular in US is not true. It’s very popular in some Latin countries and Korea/ Japan.

I grew up near Lake Placid and I have been down the small portion of the bobsled course that they let the public ride on. It is absolutely terrifying.

And the bobsled doesn’t even look THAT fast. Imagine the skeleton

Sine - I dunno why but this cracked me up bigtime. Maybe you and I are on the same wavelength or something but I think you may be into something..

😂🤣

I'm glad they don't allow compound bows, they look silly as hell and are not easy to assemble fast.
Yes, and a compound bow does not put the force on the archer like the recurve does. Most bows are 50 kg, but a compound drops that by 70-80% which make them easier to shoot. With a recurve, you really have to draw that much. Hunters prefer compounds for that reason. I know from personal experience that you can break fingers or your hand if you misjudge a recurve or have bad technique.

Winter Olympics is for rich countries. Not much participation from Africa.
How can africans even take part in winter sports? It has more to do with climate than economics.

Same idea. Only half the world has access to the winter sports.

I heard about the two high jumpers sharing gold on the radio. Thought it was corny but then I saw the highlight on YouTube and thought it was really cool.

"History, my friend".

I am genuinely confused by this comment. Is there no winter in Africa? I mean it appears to me to be a huge continent so like I assume some part of it must get snow and presumably has all the same seasons as the rest of the world?

I thought that was cool. I thought it was funny the Italian high jump winner ran onto the track and literally ran into his compatriot who literally just won his own gold in that 100m(?) sprint.

And did someone say baseball is only popular in the US? I swear Japanese and South Koreans are more into baseball than us Americans… baseball is our national pastime and all but it’s still our #3

LoL haven't you heard of the Sahara? Hard to imagine winter or snow anywhere in Africa besides Mt Kilamonjaru.

As mentioned, baseball is very popular in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico (watch the movie Traffic), Puerto Rico, and even Canada. Most people know of players like David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez, Sammy Sosa, and Jose Canseco.

Honestly I assumed it was like most other continents - some places dessert, some snowy, some forest, etc. I had no idea a continent could be mostly a single biome, except maybe Australia.

it is actually quite diverse - despite what was said earlier.
Yes there is the largest desert, but there is also the second largest rainforest (the congo).
Bu there is very little "winter weather" - there are a few scattered small ski resorts, but nothing people are going to really travel to from outside the continent.

Kind of need the right environment (more importantly ideal logistics for adequate, real world training experiences) to establish and attract very specific/niche talent...where in Africa can one adequately train for winter sports in a reasonable manner (comparable to parts of Europe, North America, Japan, other more common participants in winter games)

Sigh...can we like not turn things all political, racial ,economical, etc.? So...how about those gymnasts?

Latin America is holding for you on line 1.

Fair enough. I guess I was familiar with Latin American players coming the US to play on teams here, and just assumed that was because of lack of opportunities for major league in their own countries. But yes, I know I shouldn't ASSume.
