Virtual externships are almost completely useless. Try to go to at least one in person one.

I don’t think virtual externships are useless. At Medstar we take into account heavily who shows interest, especially since our hospital system still limits in person externships and rotators.

Sorry you did not get a response but short answer is No.
We have been doing in person externships and had to d/c the virtual because we have had so many externs in person it became difficult to organize both.

Despite being two years out from COVID, ACGME is still requiring all externships and interviews be held virtually. So please join us this upcoming August 24th, 2022 for our Virtual Externship. Come meet the faculty, tour the facility, and hear from our current residents about our program. Please email Shannon Otto if you would like to RSVP.

Meh, I don't think virtual externships do much except fill the CV. Some programs are limited on what they can offer and thats just too bad for them. I hope they enjoy the virtual interviews with applicants they get 15 minutes with. If I see an applicant with multiple "virtual externships" and no in-person. Good luck next year for me. Now, can you learn more about a program from a 1-2 hour "externship"? sure! but does that mean you know what that program is really like? probably not. So for those looking to see more of the OMS world. Have at it.

My externships were extremely eye opening and invaluable and I often think about stuff I learned on them or saw today. The most important being just how tough residency is and an extern is still only seeing a small part and not the stuff behind the scenes a lot of the time.

I couldn’t imagine what my intern year would’ve been like going in without in person externships and not knowing what was expected of me etc.
