Hello everyone,

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program at the University of Tennessee Knoxville will host a Virtual Open House on Thursday September 25, 2025. All interested OMS applicants are invited to attend. It will start at 19:00 EST (16:00 PST) to allow for applicants from the west coast to attend after clinic.

The event will be hosted by the rising chief residents, junior residents and our residency and fellowship program director, Dr. Michael L Winstead.

The open house will include an overview of the program, scope of practice, resident experience, etc. There will be several dedicated breakout groups (attendings, rising chiefs, junior residents) so we can answer all your questions from various perspectives.

UT Medical Center is the only level I trauma center in east Tennessee and the OMFS department is responsible for trauma call all year round 24/7. There are no plastic surgery or ENT residency here. We are also the tracheotomy team and will perform all non-emergent non-trauma trachs (all patients in the neurocritical care and medical critical care units). We have a high volume of trauma, pathology and operating room experience.

The department receives ~1500 trauma consults per year which translates to ~300 add-on trauma cases. We have operating room privileges every day of the week. Residents on primary call is required to be in house and will receive a full post-call day (they usually leave at ~8am after lecture the following day).

The deadline to apply to our program is Wednesday October 1st, 2025, via ADEA PASS. More details about the program will be shared during the Virtual Open House.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions.

PS: If you are an OMS applicant, OMS resident or OMS graduate, you are invited to participate in an anonymous survey exploring your perspective on the 4-year versus 6-year OMS residency tracks as part of a study we are conducting.

We encourage you to come extern and visit our program. The OMS department have a 2nd dedicated call room for externs so you won't have to pay for hotels. Our call rooms were just renovated last year!
