Cdoconn | c/o 2021 | Willing to work on whatever you need (content, ideas, grammar, vocabulary, staying towards the prompt, etc). Last year, I reviewed a lot of personal statements, but one person told me that I was too mean and unempathetic to what it’s like writing a personal statement, so I’m emphasizing this: I don't sugarcoat things, but my criticism will be constructive and very helpful.

Ziggyandjazzy, Oregon State ‘22, I can help you with whatever. Fine tuning tiny grammar issues is not my forte as I grew up with a bilingual education. I can definitely help you with your “story” and getting across what you want to. I tend towards brutal honesty lol. (I can fix formatting on this post later, on my phone atm bc I am unfortunately having MacBook issues, again, sigh)

(I can fix formatting on this post later, on my phone atm bc I am unfortunately having MacBook issues, again, sigh)

YoungKal • MI ST C/O 2022 • I can help with whatever. I’m not super good at grammar but I got really good at explaining experiences.

one person told me that I was too mean and unempathetic to what it’s like writing a personal statement, so I’m emphasizing this: I don't sugarcoat things, but my criticism will be constructive and very helpful.
why did this make me laugh so much? I think it's just because I think of you as a ray of sunshine, cdo.

I wish I could help with going through some personal statements this year, but I'm anticipating being too busy with master's projects/miscellaneous classes and personal projects to be able to do it in a timely manner. Maybe next year.

Hahahahaha it made @Teepster87 laugh too when I read their feedback on me. I AM a freaking fantastic ray of sunshine who apparently hurts feelings.

Ok its a bit early, but I feel like as high school students we were given this huge list of dos and donts for personal statements. Is it a major faux pas to use a quote in your essay responses?

I personally wouldn’t since you have such a small amount of characters allowed. And that’s letters, spaces, punctuation, and returns.

The "What are my chances thread" made me start to think of this for the upcoming cycle. It opens May 11-Friday! Please feel free to message any of us any time so we can help you out. Remember we do this to help you all so please be mindful and courteous to us! We all do our best to help you be the best applicant you can be.

DO NOT ERASE THESE INSTRUCTIONS!

1) Click "quote" on the most recent post.
2) Add your SDN screen name, your credentials, and specific things you are willing to edit for (content only, grammar only, etc) under the "current readers" section. DO NOT post your email address.
3) Delete the quote tags at both the top and the bottom.
4) If you are unable to read any more personal statements, please come back and remove your name from the list.

Example:

Username | Vet student | focus on grammar/readability/content/etc | any other pertinent info

CURRENT READERS

MixedAnimals77 | Vet student Class of 2022 | focus on whatever you need | I want to make sure your answers are descriptive of you while effectively communicating essential points of your answers. Let me know what you want to focus on!

StayingPositive2017 | Vet student Class of 2022 | readability, some grammar | You can do it! Stay Positive!

that redhead - small animal/exotics GP. I’ll read it and let you know what I think

finnickthedog | c/o 2021 | I'll try to focus on whatever you want to focus on but I'm pretty much just going to give you whatever feedback comes to mind and that may or may not line up with what you were looking for if you were wanting feedback on a specific aspect

Chili_cat | c/o 2022 | Grammar and content, but can give feedback on anything you need really. I’m a philosophy major, so I have lots of practice with writing clearly and concisely (which is necessary for those staying within those character limits:p)

Glammyre | c/o 2018, going into epidemiology research | Grammar and readability, but happy to soundboard on content. I'll respond faster to PMs than to thread notifications.

WhtsThFrequency | specialist and faculty member | I can help specifically with statements from candidates who are interested in alternative avenues in vet med - i.e. public health, pathology, research, translational medicine, etc. However, if anyone has worries about setting themselves apart and creating a very directed, professional statement I can always give advice.

canyonman | c/o 2022 | I can mostly help with grammar/content/readability, but will also comment on whatever comes to mind. Also feel free to ask specific questions if you have concerns about your essays.

SportPonies | U of I c/o 2021 | Throw it all at me! I tend to be very nitpicky about grammar, but content is my real forte.

allygator13 | SGU/UTK c/o 2018, starting a rotating internship in June | I'm a grammar nazi so can help with that, but also will give general feedback and help with content where necessary :)

Elkhart | Former member of the c/o 2020 | I'd say that my greatest strengths lie in nitpicking grammar and other general mechanics such as flow and word choice/variability. Truthfully, I'm probably best utilized as a final proofreader moreso than as a starting point.

finnickthedog | c/o 2021 | I'll try to focus on whatever you want to focus on but I'm pretty much just going to give you whatever feedback comes to mind and that may or may not line up with what you were looking for if you were wanting feedback on a specific aspect

AFutureDogtor | C/O 2022 | I'm super great with grammar and the technical aspects of writing. I'm also willing to help you put together your story/make your writing flow, but I'm not great at putting things together from the very, very beginning, so please come to me with something already written. Feel free to ask me questions beyond just those for your statement! :) Good luck!

RedLauren| C/O 2022 | I can help you with making sure that what you write will highlight what makes you unique and what you as an individual will contribute to your class and to veterinary medicine. I think it is important to show the admissions committee that you are not just one of many in the sea of applicants - so make yourself stand out! I will help you avoid cliches, and highlight your strengths. I'm also good at checking grammar and the continuity of your writing.

genny | small animal GP | I am good at making wordy writing more concise. I did an explanation statement with my application in 2012, so I can give feedback on those too. I was a non-trad student.

WildZoo | vet student c/o 2020 | I have a degree in writing and lots of experience critiquing so I'll give you all kinds of feedback. I tend to be pretty thorough so I'm not the person to come to if you're up against the deadline, but otherwise I can be helpful at any stage in the writing process.

Hi! Just some general personal statement/essay questions. For the tone of how I should be writing my responses: should it be a more conversational/casual tone or very professional? I know I've seen that it's good to have some humor and personality in the writing which makes me think more conversational (too a point), but also this is an important application. I've been writing my personal statement responses in a professional tone. I am a decent writer and am comfortable writing in this way, it isn't unlike my normal writing. I'm just wondering what's appropriate. Also, does anybody have any advice on keeping things concise? I just realized that the input box is 1500 characters, not 1500 words...

Thanks so much!

Others feel free to chime in. However, Imo you don't have characters to mess around with the way it's structured now. Professional being direct and to the point with support of your experiences is the best approach. As far as concise erase your 1500 words and start from scratch because it's super hard to cut that much down. Answer the question with what you feel is important 2-3 main points then trim it down.

Yeah, it sucks but I would recommend starting from scratch if you are that much over the limit.

As for the tone, I think there's a healthy median. You want your wording to be professional, but not so much so that it is stiff and sounds forced. You still want it to reflect you. That's something that is difficult to really describe, so you may just want to hit up one of the lovely people on the list in this thread to read over what you've got, once you have something that is within the character limit.

I'd also recommend reading it out loud, see how it sounds. That can be really helpful with any writing.

mmmdreamerz | c/o 2021 | I can definitely help with grammar but my favorite thing is to help make the writing “flow.” Happy to help with anything really. I’ll be honest, but I’ll be nice about it haha.

MD PhD| MD PhD c/o 2021 | Name says it all. Long time lurker. Would love to give back to the SDN community as it helped me a lot during my application process (especially the school specific threads.) Can check for grammar and flow.

johnnaboo | c/o 2022 | I used to work in my undergrad career center as a resume and cover letter critiquer so I'm very good at helping people target their essays and really "selling" your skill set. I've also gotten really good at explaining sensitive or "pity party" stories by putting a positive spin on them since I wrote a few of my own when I applied.

Sorry guys, I have to pull myself from this too. If you already messaged me, I promise I'll give you edits. But I'm moving later this week and then starting orientation, so I won't have really any more time to devote to this. Good luck all!

Also removing myself. If you have sent me your essays, rest assured I am working on them. But classes start in a little over a week so I won't have time for more.

ISO 1 or 2 PS readers who are still available - @genny do you still have some time?

Thanks in advance, friends :)
