208/85. I have no idea if it's below average.

I've been told I'd be competitive for IM, OBGYN, Peds, Family (also in top 40% of class). Obviously, there are some IM or OB programs that would be out of reach with that score. Just depends on where you want to go.

I want to do family, and always have, so I'm not worried.

the US average is 217/88

If you are from a US school, you will be competetive in IM, FP, etc.

If you are a IMG...that score might just get you in somewhere...

Depends on the rest of your applications and where you are willing to live. If your grades are good and you are ok with living in podunk USA you can get EM, Anes, gen surg, neuro and path.

The mean and SD are actually given on your score report.

A 207 from a US school should keep ur doors open for a lot of specialties. With less competitive ones like IM,peds, family you will probably get to pick where you want to go. With a little more competitive ones like EM, path, neuro, anesthesio probably a bit of a scramble but still very possible to get to pick. With extremely competitive ones like surgical specialties very difficult to get in anywhere. Just what I think from having known several residents.

that's good to know...i just didnt know whether or not i had a decent chance to match with any discipline with out having to struggle... I'm not a good test taker at all ......so i am actually content with the score.


i am actually interested in either PEDS-Hem ONC OR IM-GI
so i'm happy. 😀

Do fellowships really use step 1 as much of a selection factor? That's after 3 years of internal medicine residency, so I'm not sure if they do or not, or with how much scrutiny. You may be right. One thing, though, is that with a below-average step 1 score you will have less of a chance at the more competitive IM residencies, which will later on put you at a disadvantage when applying to competitive fellowships such as GI, Cardio, and AI.

That's ridiculous...your step 1 score cannot dictate what kind of fellowship you get...other factors should come into play to make u a more desirable cadidate.

when people look at the step 1 score do they consider how far below average your score is...like a 207 vs a 189?? or do they just lump everyone up into a below average category.

well, all i know is that I am going to put everything in God's hands...i've passed 👍 and so far so good

Completely agree. I know someone personally who scrored in 210s and got into one of the most competetive felowships in GI.

I have actually asked one of our GI specialist who told me how they recruit candidates for GI. Step I score and your medschool performance doesn't matter much, its your performance as an intern and PGY 1 that matters most. Regardless of your score if you are a good clinician with good problem solving skills, communication, etc then that will impress them more that step I. She also told me that a lot of residents don't get into GI their first time around so then you get involved in a research project and work hard and that should improve one's chances. there's no reason to think that your stepI score will hold you back in your future fellowships. Sure they will matter as far as where you get placed for IM residency but past that it has no bearing on your success.
