Heya
I'm deeply depressed from my results in my step 1... I hate it that i'm being defined by my scores

The thing i got on my mind, with this score, am i gonna be filtered-out from a huge number of programs when i apply ?

If you want a generic, online, forum answer....
No. You have NO chance.
Does that help? If not, how about....
Yes. You have a chance, anything is possible.

Do either of those answers really mean anything?

YES. You will be filtered out of every good program.

NO. There will be no filtering. You have a chance, anything is possible.

If you wait for the filter, then yes, you may be filtered. Do you have to be defined by your score? No. Make sure everything else is strong and don't be afraid to meet with or contact PDs early in the application season at top choice programs and let them get to know you. Explain that while your score is not great, it does not define you or what you will bring to their program. Ask them to consider giving you an interview. Then hope for the best.

I'm not going to answer you until you've been on Prozac for a couple weeks.

But just so you see beyond the grey sky, remember that it's just one aspect of your application. Based on the numbers, if you're a US senior with a 208, you have an 82% chance of matching.

OK, you got a 208 three-digit score. That and a couple of bucks might get you some coffee. You deal with what you got and you move on. There are plenty of good residency programs out there that will take you with that score. Have a meeting with a good faculty adviser(perhaps the Program Director at your medical school) who can look at your entire application and suggest some good-fit programs for you.

If all else fails, do a couple of away AIs and do an outstanding job clinically. Most places will offer an interview to people who do an AI and to those that do a great job. An away rotation is also a good way to get the inside track on a program. You get to see the day-to-day interactions between residents and faculty.

Get the rest of your application together and make it competitive. Get a very strong score on Step II CK with an early take (don't screw around and take this late). Above all, do well in your surgery clerkship ( Peds and Internal Medicine too). There are other things to your ERAS besides your Step I score so get busy and get beyond it.

US senior or FMG/US IMG?

Academic vs Community (community program much more likely for you at this point)?

Research on your cv?

Any letters lined up / faculty in surgery you have worked with and will likely write you a letter or be a strong voice for you?

Charting the match 2009 showed looking just at your Step 1, 110 matched and 24 didn't match (range 201-210... 208 is probably better off than 201), so you still are much more likely TO match, than not match, so don't go jumping just yet.
