Hey y'all,

It's a little hard to get good data about step score stats at specific residency programs, so just thought I'd see if anyone could weigh in.

The short of it:
-applying in anesthesiology this year
-solid US state school MD grad
-221 step 1, 237 step 2 (not amazing by any means, but have been told good enough to match somewhere...)
-all "above expected" third year grades (our grading system goes "below expected, expected, above expected, outstanding"

Specifically I'm wondering about chances at matching anywhere in NYC (I have a lot of family there and went to college at NYU), as well as Boston (Harvard's definitely out, but was curious about Tufts and Leahy). Additionally, any recommendations about other programs elsewhere that I might be competitive at?

Thanks!

Take a look at this, and then you tell us:

Not sure how helpful this is considering OP is asking about specific programs in a certain area of the country.

A good place to start may be the AMA residency resource that lists cutoffs for individual programs. It's been said that these cutoffs aren't always accurate but it may give you a decent idea of the competitiveness of the program. Other than that, take a look at program websites and see if they list any cutoffs.

Sign up for the professional anesthesiology society and go to one of their medical student symposiums if they have them. Talk to the PDs and discuss your situation.

Link?

Thats what I thought you were referring to, but I went through around 10 programs and none of them had any cut-off data.

This was most likely due to sampling error, but I looked at a surgical subspecialty in a desirable location, just for ****s and giggles.

Under what circumstance was your research more well founded?

Again, it's a very incomplete and possible inaccurate resource. I believe they collect data from program websites + surveys. Thus, information is based on what is provided by the programs. Unfortunately, it is really hit or miss.

It's been some time since I used it but I just tried with anesthesiology. I also typed in "Step 1" in the "keyword" section of the search. The first 2 programs (U of Alabama and Mayo) show step 1 cutoffs under "General Information". Again, not a complete resource by any means but may be a good starting point.

Yeah went back and did as you recommended and I feel like what I found is relatively inaccurate.

I searched urology programs in California and three things stuck out to me that are most likely wrong:
  • Every program says that STEP1 is not required for an interview
  • Every program says the max hours per week is 50
  • Every program says the max consecutive is 12
For a surgical subspecialty I would bet my bottom dollar that most, if not all of these are inaccurate.
