This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a veteran and have served two deployments disabling roadside bombs.
- Poor first semester GPA (2.1), but significant upward trend with a 3.7 overall and science.
- Co-author of a manuscript about TBI rehabilitation, published in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Participated in video documentary for the SEC Academic Network about trauma rehab efforts for veterans.
- Second author of 1 poster presentation
- 1st author (presenter) of another poster.
- Over 3 years of volunteering in ER/OR. Shadowing for 60+ hours.
- Slotted to retake MCAT, but if I don't score on practices decently before test should I submit my application with my current score/stats.

Thanks in advance

Your life experience is good, which DO schools appreciate greatly. My suggestion is to apply with these stats since you have a good GPA and plan to retake the MCAT. You might get a few interviews with the 23 but keep in mind a 26+ MCAT would be amazing for your application.

Good luck. 👍

Also, apply broadly.

What were your section scores on that 23? If any are below a 6 you need to retake. If any are a 6, you should still be considering getting a higher score before applying.

Very good question. I was a 7/6/10. Lop-sided, and the 7 in physics was strange because I never scored that low and averaged around around a 9/10. My verbal practice average was a 7. Still have to figure that one out. I plan on starting studying again Monday. Retake is Sept 1. If you have any more advice, I appreciate it!

I applied last year with way less life experience....a 22 MCAT 3.7c/3.4s with a 6 in biology and I received an interview at a DO school, so the fact you have a 10 in BS...a higher science GPA and more life experience...I'd say you might pull of an interview or two....but it all depends what you want (money situation/would you mind taking another year off/how well can you do in Sept)....I guess all I'm trying to say is with your stats its not impossible!

I don't give a rat's ass about that 23MCAT, we'll take you!!
And thank you for your service to your country.

I agree. MCAT is barely acceptable but with your GPA and background I doubt you'll have much trouble.

Hey guys,
I posted a 28L in May (9 VR, 11 PS, 8 BS- bio section was beyond everyone I spoke with). 3.94 science gpa with 4.0 non-science. Upper Michigan resident. Anyone have an idea of what my shot may be?

Would also like to add that I personally know someone with the exact same mcat/gpa as you with lesser ECs that got into DO last cycle.

I really appreciate the feedback everyone has given. I might try to submit this year with current scores and just prepare for the MCAT later in the year with the hopes of reapplying early next year if things don't turn out as planned. Thanks all!

if you plan on applying this year I suggest submitting soon and applying as early as possible

OP FWIW Goro is an adcom, I believe and Goro was clearly impressed. I think that means you'll be ok regardless of the MCAT retake. That being said, it can't HURT to have a higher MCAT.
Caveat: Take this advice with a grain of salt, I'm just premed.

Firstly, I would just like to say Thank You for your service. Now as for advice, I think you should apply but consider retaking MCAT sometimes during the app. cycle just so you can have a stronger application in case you need to re-apply. Honestly speaking, your experience is invaluable and very few other premeds can even come close to matching it so I wouldn't be surprised if you get an acceptance. Best of luck:xf:
