Besides taking a year off to do research, how much can you really do to up your application?
Well I'm more referring to doing well grade wise in preclinicals (if it's graded), doing well on your clinical clerkships, etc. Research and presenting that research allows you to network as well.

How so? I've always assumed this is important, yet I don't see how you'd tie it into a CV. Just curious.

I wasn't talking about a CV, I was talking about getting a residency spot.
 
*Sigh.* This is because the astronomically increased emphasis placed on Step exams by undergraduate medical education programs as the "key to your success in medicine". 15 years ago these were still mainly thought of as pass/fail exams. I remember telling my research advisor I was going to take 7 weeks to study for Step 1 and his reply was "I took 7 days".
7 days! And to think you have IMGs who study for more than a year for step 1!

What if you don't know anybody important? How does one go about making these connections? I was thinking about sending some PD's a love letter inscribed with my blood. Is this good enough?
