if you've received a 28 on an MCAT in relatively recent (2005-present) and been accepted, can you respond with the schools you were invited for an interview at and your Cum GPA?

How about this: Go buy an MSAR and apply to schools that take a lower MCAT and GPA.

Is it really that hard?

👍

It's like 15 bucks for the .pdf and will save you a ton of time from googling/SDNing to find answers.

The osteopathic version of the MSAR (name is escaping me) is free online I believe as well... So with a 28 MCAT, I'm assuming you're applying MD and DO. Good resources to have.

Good luck.

I got a 28, had a cGPA of 3.6, and am a California resident. Basically, I thought I was doomed. I applied to many MD and a few DO programs. I received four interviews, about 20 rejections, and then I withdrew from the rest.

My interviews: UC Davis, TCMC, Michigan State CHM, and Touro-CA.
~Rejected at UCD
~Waitlisted at TCMC
~Accepted to MSU
~Withdrew before interview on Touro-CA

The top 3 programs I was interested in going into this application cycle (for various personal and academic reasons) were: Michigan State CHM, UCLA Prime, and UCDavis. So, I got interviews at 2/3 of my top three programs. I am very very happy with how this application cycle. Don't get down about a 28 MCAT score. It can be done! 🙂

I'm curious, when did you apply? It's great that you got so many interviews even with slightly lower stats. Hopefully, the rest of us are as lucky.

I had my primary app in at the end of June and most of my secondaries done by the mid-September, but didn't even submit my primary for Touro-CA until the end of November. So, I didn't really apply early, but if I had to reapply, I would absolutely do it earlier.

My biggest suggestion is to have a genuine reason for applying to the programs you choose (not just that they are highly ranked) and convey your reasoning for wanting to go there in your essays. For me, I knew Davis was an absolute long shot, but my personal statement and supplemental application essays gave very compelling reasons for why I would be a good candidate. Similarly, as an OOS applicant, I knew I was at a huge disadvantage for MSU, but again the essays are what I think got me into the interview. Stats are obviously important, but if you are like me and are at a disadvantage stats-wise, essays are your best friend because they are what is going to get you in.

But, yeah. I didn't really apply that early, but I would absolutely suggest that anyone who has slightly lower stats to apply as early as possible.

You can always retake if you are that worried about applying with a score on the low side.

Retake.

I had a 28, and ended up with a 33. Made all the difference in my cycle. Ten interviews and 6 acceptances, including 2 top 20 schools. And I had about the same GPA as you.

Meh, the MSAR is a waste of time and money not to mention increasing neuroticism exponentially. 😎

I had a 28 and applied twice with it (did not retake MCAT). I had a 3.96 GPA (non-science degree) but am a non-trad.

Texas resident, only applied in Texas. Applied to all Texas state schools minus Baylor.

Interviews:
Tech (accepted prematch)
Tech El Paso (accepted prematch)
A&M (Accepted prematch)
Galveston (accepted prematch) (prematched, my first choice)
TCOM (basically told me to get DO shadowing the fist time and I said no, no interview the second time. lol)
San Antonio (waitlisted)

It can be done, dont buy into the SDN 32+ MCAT scenario. Its about the total person not just one score. Good luck.

Edit: I'm a second year so it may be different now I guess, but I doubt it.

28, 3.3gpa, but my postbac (about 60-70 credits including my pre-reqs) was around 3.9.

I received a very early interview at FIU, which was one of my top 2 choices (I was very interested in FIU and UCF). I was accepted in mid October and withdrew from all other schools but 1 so I didn't take up an interview spot at a school I'd rather not go to anyway.

So... not much help in the how many interviews section, but I did get in with a 28.

I just applied with a 28 (3.5) to many MD and a few DO schools. Got no MD interviews, but I got DO interviews at most of my schools. I ended up withdrawing before most of the interviews because my first DO acceptance was one of my top choices, so I can't say how many acceptances I would have gotten.

Bottom Line: If you want only MD schools, a 28 is not enough unless you have a high GPA to redeem it. If you like the DO option, 28 is average for the more competitive schools.

Not true. My friend was accepted with a around a 3.3 postbac GPA, a 3.1 ugrad GPA, and 10/8/10M on the MCAT to USF - not a Florida state resident, and got his secondary in at the last possible day.

So, no real rules here.

Be prepared for URM questions.

Not necessarily. If you have a strong personal statement, amazing ECs, and stellar Letters of Rec, they will make up for your 28 mcat and 3.5 average gpa. Remember, the MCAT is only one (albeit a very important one) parameter by which medical schools judge you by. If you have a strong rest of the application, you still have a decent shot. Apply to many, many schools (if you can afford it, I'd say at least 30) and send it your apps early.

Everyone has a weakness, if the mcat is the only weakness you're okay. However, if you have other weaknesses ..then it might be a problem. The 3.5 gpa is a wash, It's not bad or good. Make sure your other things shine!

I don't know how much getting this info will help you. Generally for those who are accepted with an MCAT score around 27-29, the rest of their application has made up for the slightly less attractive MCAT score. This means things like uGPA, grad GPA, extracurriculars, research/publications etc... How a school will weigh everything is dependent on that school. Just because person X got an interview at school a,b,c with a 28 and 3.5 doesn't mean if you have a 28 and 3.5 you have better chance with a,b and c.

I have a 28/3.3 and was just accepted off the alternate list at MSU CHM. I'm sure a higher mcat would have made the road much easier but I'm very happy about MSU. I also got a bunch of DO interviews and was accepted to my top 2 DO schools. I'm not a URM or a non-trad, but I am very lucky.
