I ask this, because we have all been taught in med school that the more tests you run on a patient, the more likely you are to get an abnormal result that you won't know what to do with. I think every program has its bad apples, and they can only keep them away from the applicants for so long. The more direct contact you have with the program the more likely you are to run into them. Not only that, but it increases the chances that the program will unearth those skeletons in your closet.
I prefer to maintain a healthy distance as much as possible and email or call those who I specifically want to talk to.
I mean how much are you really going to gain in a 2nd, 3rd, 4th... visit that you did not already get on a 1st visit-- exept discovering where the mad psychiatrist works so you can avoid that rotation at all costs.
Though I do concede your point, maranatha, a wife's point of view is probably worth the visit.
