What are everyone's opinion on 2nd looks? Are alot of people doing them? One program said they don't allow them, as it would be an unfair advantage. Others I hear are open to them and one even suggested it. I would guess that most of us don't have the money nor the time to do so...but do they add any additional advantage?

Hello,
I am only a third year so I apologize if this is a stupid question.

What do you mean by a second look? Is it a second interview requested by the program or the studen? Or is it a quick phone call?

thank you.

A 2nd look that I'm referring to is one in which you physically show up at the department to see more of the department, observe, shadow, etc. This is usually instigated by the interviewee...at least for residency. 2nd looks for faculty positions are a little different I assume, but that's a whole different thread....

Thank you

How often does this happen? Do a lot of applicants do this?

you can do them; some places are fine with it. do it if you really like a place and think that actually being there will help, not hinder you (not ttrue for everyone!)
ITs not essential.

Definitely right, no money or time to do second looks, but if you have any questions about a program you may be spending 4 years at, it's probably worth it.
