how many of you guys are requesting second looks for radonc and prelim places? I'm almost convinced it's unnecessary.

Well since I don't really have the time for 2nd looks, I guess you could say I've almost convinced myself it's unnecessary.

But seriously, I think most PDs would not take a 2nd visit into the ranking equation (a few have openly said so).

These are generally unnecessary. If they liked you at the interview, they'll keep liking you even if you don't stop by again. If they thought you were annoying, they'll still think you're annoying (only possibly even more so).

I think its pretty unnecessary; I can't say it will never help or hurt; I did it so many years ago but from this side of the fence, I don't think it helps EXCEPT as to show your interest in a program. Programs will sometimes skew their ranking system if they think you are really or really not interested.

Once I requested a second look (to the program I ultimately ranked #1). The PD got sorta defensive and said something like "we are not hiding anything." That was weird.

you can't really predict how anyone will interpret any given thing; some programs may understand you want t achance to show interest, or show your abilitity. sounds like that pd though you were trying to get them to "reveal" themselves. What can you do.

I recently inquired about taking a 2cd look at a program I am strongly considering (more than anything to get a better feel than is possible from the interview day about the repoire amongst the residents and faculty), but when I emailed the pd about it, he strongly discouraged it. He essentially told me that my visit could put him in a difficult position for legal reasons as an ACGME accredited program because it may implicate favoritism towards one residency candidate over the others. He also told me that it was an awkward request that he has never come across as a pd. Thoughts?

I would discourage it. Applicants have no idea how difficult and disruptive it is to have them in the department. Don't get me wrong, all programs love to have an opportunity to meet the potential future residents. But rearranging all the involved schedules for a second look would be prohibitive at most places, IMHO. If we loved you after one day, we'll love you the same after a second day.... 😍
