I can't seem to make any friends in medical school... Everyone already seems to know everyone else and have their groups also.
Did I miss the critical window of finding a group? What are other ways to belong?
It feels like high school all over...

1. Go to someone that looks nice.
2. Say hi and introduce yourself.
3. ???
4.Sit with them in class.

It is high school all over.

Tips: go to a few small groups (tutor / interest group / sports / etc) and find people who have similar interests with you. Most everyone only has like 4-5 people they really click with, it's a lot of cliques. I don't really like the clique thing but it is what it is.

Had similar experience, compounded by the fact that I'm not really a "partier" which seemed to limit how socially accepted i was. There are people out there for you, you'll find them.

It is like high school all over again. It's a very insular environment.

I wouldn't worry too much that you haven't made friends just yet. Don't put so much pressure on yourself to do so.

You are at a new school (likely), in a new living situation, and transitioning to medical school. Even though everyone may seem like they have a new group of best friends, in all reality, most of these relationships have just started to form.

You'll make friends as the year drags on. It's unavoidable.

Be social. Are you willing to party? You'll make friends in med school. Even if you're a little awkward, med schoolers always appreciate someone who comes out after tests. It's significantly harder if you stay cooped up by yourself after tests and look down on everyone that drinks.

the small group/go out/join clubs suggestions are great. The best thing you can do is just say hi to people, ask where they're from, find common ground, and always be approachable. Best way to handle any social situation.

Just wanted to say that even if you don't drink, go out with your classmates on the weekend! There are people in my class that don't drink, but still come out and have a good time. We often have some sort of potluck thing followed by beer...so join for the potluck and leave if it gets too crazy!

Sorry to break it to you everyone hates you bro you have no chance drop out now

Tons of people in my class come out to the bars on weekends and dont drink either because they dont drink at all or want to study the next morning.

There is no way in a large class you cannot have similar interests with at least a handful of people. To give you an idea of my class cliche groups:

Alcoholic group
Pot head group
Meat head group that works out together all the time
Blonde girl group
Indian group
Video game group
Athletic group
Gunner group (multiple ones)
Outdoorsy/Hiker group

And every single other group of every ethnic background, interest, etc

Im sure you fit one of those cliches

You'll find a someone or some people who will share similar interests and habits. Don't worry about it. Studies come first, anyway.

Pretty good summary. Instead of "Alcoholic Group," I like to refer to is as the "Party Group." Wonder which one I'm in 🙄

Depending on the med-school, there are multiple of these.

Many of these groups overlap. I would consider myself a member of 3-4 of these groups, but obviously identified most with one of the above.

I have more membership in clubs than I have close friends (~10).

I'll be your friend,

Please don't be fat.

OP, I think you are going to be OK. I just started 2 weeks ago and while I have a group I sit with during lecture and know many people by name, but I haven't met any "best friends" yet. Whether I will or not, I am not too worried. I am doing intramurals and attend the social functions though. Give it time, school just started.

There's no reason to limit yourself to medical school either. Look around your neighborhood or city for clubs or groups to join that share your interests. You might wanna try this site.
http://www.meetup.com/
It helped me find a gamers club in the area my 2nd semester and i"ve been pretty happy ever since. Even if most of the friends i've made so far have been outside the school rather than in it.

the number of gunner groups drops substantially after the first test.

Winning.

yeah the whole high school thing is really strange. i find it easier just to be like you were in college and if gain a lot of friends cool...if not, just be nice when people when they (if they) talk to you and don't make enemies, cause what people think about you will spread

I was going to say you forgot Princesses but then I realized that was the same as "blonde girl group."

OP, you got any other friends in town?

This guy nailed it. As for you OP, you could use this solitude as a chance to improve your worth to your class- ie run for an elected position in a student club, be on top of your classes, get involved in some sports- that way, people will come to you b/c you are an asset and they can use you. I personally enjoy being used, both in the figurative sense and physical sense. Call me maybe. PROTEIN!!!

tool.

This is great. At my school, they're referred to as sorority row. All fun and games.

Friends are for the weak.........

just be a lone gunner!!

This. Most friends in med school will just leech from you anyways. Or you can just have multiple personalities - gunner in the day, partier in the night. That's kind of what I did.

It is quite similar to high school with "clicks" - I'd recommend you join a club that you're interested in and do introduce yourself to others when you see them alone. You can't be the only one in your class that's in this situation

Clique sounds all snooty, which helps to convey the general idea better.

I've been foreveralone through high school and college. I will probably be foreveralone through medical school and residency as well.

As Bane would say, you merely adopted the loneliness. I was born into it.
