Applications are being turned in and interviews are happening! I am in the second trimester of my 2nd year. I’ve been a graduate assistant for two years, helping with the admissions process and conducting interviews. I also am on the board of directors for the student run clinic at our school. Have some downtime this semester looking to give back. Shoot!

What advice do you have for the PTCAS personal statement or essays in general? Any really big mistakes to avoid that you've seen before in applicants?

I have C in Anatomy. All my other pre-reqs at B+ and A's. Do you think I should mention this grade in the section that asks Does your grade reflect your academic capabilities. I only got a C because I messed up the second exam, on the third and fourth exam I got a solid A but obviously this sin't reflected in the grade. Would it be worth mentioning since the grade doesn't represents my ability to learn anatomy?

Thanks!

Advise, for lower GPA? Also how to stand out?

Yes, I would mention it but do not explain it away or make excuses for the grade. Use the space to reflect on how you could have succeed, what you learned from it and with a conclusion on why it doesn't reflect your true ability to perform academically. As for personal statements the biggest flaw is people being too scared to write something unique, grammar is also a huge problem which many don't seem to pay attention to. Get it read many time prior to submitting.

I applied with a 2.98 and got it! I have a 3.4 currently even tho we are on a 7 point scale. If you wish to stand out on applications get a really high GRE and write a unique personal statement. Unfortunately, outside of these two things there isn't much one can do to stand out on paper as many schools just crunch numbers when selecting applicants to interview.

Can I ask you what you wrote about to make your personal statement unique to set you apart from other applicants, regardless of your low GPA? I feel like I'm in the same boat and I'm really struggling right now with the application

As that was 3 years ago for me I cannot remember much. I know I drew on my previous medical experiences (EMT, Pharm tech, ER scribe, lead PT aide). I used those to talk about my journey to choosing PT and also about professionalism within each experience. Usually PTCAS has a different question every few years so it's unlikely my statement matches yours.

How many hours a day you study in DPT school? How is DPT school compared to undergrad? How do schools view withdrawals applicants have especially withdrawals in pre req courses?

Hello! My name is Tony 🙂 Would you be willing to help me out by reading my essay?

Withdraws won't effect you much unless the school has a specific cap on the number you can have. Depending on the semester hours studying a day varying, my first and 3rd semester I was studying about 2-3hrs a day after 8hrs of course work. It is very challenging however I still was able to go to the gym everyday and watch some netflix. I consider the program much easier content wise outside of those two semesters than my undergrad, but I had a very hard undergrad (Biology) at a top 30 school and was a PT aide for 3 years so these factors might offset my judgement of difficulty.

Have you started any of your clinical internships yet? In your program are there any paid positions for CIs? If so, any tips on how to find/get placed at one of those?

Yes I have finished by first clinical, what do you mean by paid CI positions? We have a non-profit student ran clinic at our school with faculty and outside CI's but they are all volunteers. All CI's for student clinicals work at facilities and make a salary...they are not paid extra for being a CI.
