2ndary structure of stem and roots

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As the secondary xylem matures and grows, it pushes outward and causes the secondary phloem to crack and get crushed as it's unable to divide/grow to accommodate the growth of the stem.

xylem is the wood on the inside, either heart (older secondary xylem, now useless) or sap wood ( secondary xylem still transporting water or xylem sap) .
