How important is the little passport sized photo? For some schools it is "optional, but very helpful."
It's $13 at Kinko's to get a couple of passport sized photos - and I don't want to spend it. That's dinner for like 2 days. And then I have to be like clean shaven and stuff, too. And that's awful lot of work for an optional pic.
And I'm not all fugly (I'm not a model either) but I'm sort of average looking, so that's not the issue.
Thanks for any feedback.

If they say it's helpful, why would you skimp on $13?!

Do you have a digital camera or a friend with a digital camera? If so, you could take the pic with that, get it printed on decent photopaper, and it will be fine. That way would probably be cheaper.

I found a picture of myself and took it to kinko's and had them make it into passport sizes, cost me $2.00. All they have to do is scan and print out your desired size.

$6.50/pic x 15 schools = expensive. But you have a point.

That is what I did. I just printed on high quality and it looked pretty good (not me, just the quality of the picture). It was actually easier to fold up, too, because it was thinner.

As somebody that has done interviews, let me tell you how helpful that picture is. After interviewing hundreds of people, the interviewer may remember that he really liked "that guy" but can't quite put a name to the face he remembers. Having that pic on the application could really help you out.

Unless you have a very memorable and strange name that will stand out - get the pic done.

YOu can save a little money if you just use a digital cam, and take the pic yourself. Use your computers photoeditor (or even the paint program) to resize the pic to 2x2, and take it to a photo shop. They charged me $15 for 15 pics.

Good luck!

(PS.. don't do a passport photo place, those pics end up terrible!)

If you go with the passports from Kinkos you can then walk over to their photo style photocopier (it goes on glossy photopaper just like a real picture) and make as many as you want for like 20cents a page, I could fit two passports on each of these, so it wasn't a big deal (especially when compared with what I've spent already . . .). I'd do it.

When it comes to your apps, DON'T SKIMP. Give them all they info they need to work with. As MoosePilot said, take a digital pic of yourself. Make as many passport size pics on a sheet as you can and print that one sheet. At Walmart, its like $0.25 per picture (5x8?) and you can fit I think 2 or 4 of those passport type pictures on one. Hope it helps.

Actually, my parents are hella foreign, so my name is extra freaky. And it's got a sort of lyrical sing-song quality, to boot. But that part about the hundreds of applicants to parse really makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

I took a digital picture of me, cropped it, and formatted it to 2" by 2", which is the size of a passport photo. This cost me nothing. I did all this with the crap programs that come standard with Microsoft windows & office. Hang up a blue background behind you on a door (I used the plain backside of a t-shirt). Have a friend snap a pic with a digital camera, then edit it in your pc. If you have any basic heashots already, scan one of those into the pc, then edit it. Voila! free passport photos!

BTW, when I interviewed, the dean pointed out to our interview group that some of the applicants had sent photos that looked like they had been taken from parties or football games. They were not impressed with those photos!

I don't have a digital camera but I had some of vacation pictures developed and put on a cd. I cropped them and then printed them out on a color printer at work.

desiredusername,

Are you from Cali.?
No, but I went to college in Seattle and half of the people there wannabe from cali - hence the "hella". (wow, wannabe is in the dictionary!)

OP, you can get a passport photo made at Eckerds, and then have them put it on CD. The cost for that is $9 + $2.99, and you get 2 photos. Then, every time you need more, bring the CD back and every pair you get is $0.29. So 15 pics would be about $14. Only have to shave once, too.

Thats just trashy. Why not just put the icing on the cake and show up in overalls? heh.

You're telling me! $75-$100/secondary x 20 schools = hella expensive (I stole that).

It's worth it. You could almost make a "priceless" ad.

Princeton Review MCAT course: $1500
AMCAS: $200
Secondary fees: $1500
Interview travel and accomodations: $2000
Acceptance to medical school: Priceless

heres a good way to do it. Cheap too (free)

Walgreens will print digital photos for you through their website. Setup an Account, and you get 10 free 4x6 prints.

Well figure out the math, and size your photo so you have 6 2"x2" pictures in one 4x6. send it online, they print it and pick up at the store.

Absolutely free.

Thats what i did!

Good luck

The Pre-med society at my school made a shirt of that exact thing. It was pretty tacky and snobby actually.

This is the way to go. Or, you can take a digital photo, or scan a photo, use Adobe or some other program to make a page full of 2x2's, and print them out on one sheet of 8.5 x 11 photo paper. That's what I did. I still have some left over, if I need 'em for next year's applications!!

I think the important question here that isn't being asked of the op... How did you get the little o to float next to the 2 to make "secondary" in the title?

I've got a mac so I don't know if this works on windows, but alt-0 makes that UNICODE symbol.

This is why you will be a great doctor--so observant! 🙂

if you're a member of AAA, you can get passport pictures done (only 2 of them though) for really cheap. its like 36 cents if you are premium member. its only for 2 pics though (you get 2 passport pics per year), so thats an idea for 2 schools youre applying!

🙂

 I like the way you think, I also got mine for free, but it was because my friend worked at a photo shop and checked out an 8MP digicam and printed them for me for free. Free is always better.

if you're not very good looking, don't send a picture. my 2 cents.

I paid $10 for a digital photo saved on CD. I then went to a Photo shop and made 20 copies for $10.Plus, the CD comes in handy when some online applications ask to upload the photo (ex. Mount Sinai).
:luck:
