Hey all. I'm new to posting on SDN, so I apologize if the format of my post is weird or anything.
I just completed my third-year undergrad, and I'm wondering how my chances would stand with MD/DO schools? I know my GPA is noncompetitve (I had a very rough freshman year and sophomore Spring), so I'm pretty much relying on the MCAT to kind of balance it a bit (taking that June 21st).
As far as my ECs go, it's a pretty strong list, and I was wondering if that might help me out during the admissions process. They include:
- 3 years of clinical (a mobile clinic providing services to underserved populations, also included conducting patient follow-ups, 3hrs/week)
- 3 years hospital work (involved patient and physician interaction, not the kind that is filing paperwork, 6hrs/week)
- 2 years of autism research assistance experience (3hrs/week)
- 2 summers with an underserved medicine research group (involved collecting and analyzing state health care data, as well as developing small individual research projects; will participating again this summer)
- undergraduate teacher's assistant for genetics course (professor is writing a letter of rec)
- currently serving on the executive board for an organization that focuses on freshmen development and programming (Vice President of Membership, so I develop a curriculum, organize recruitment, administer the organization's director team, as well as other things)
- campus ambassador for my university (provide campus tours, interact with alumni at events hosted by the university's President, etc.)
I'm also considering applying to my school's combined bachelor's/MPH program. Could this also give me a slight advantage in applying? I know some posts have said it's not looked at as strongly as post-bacc, but it's a field I'm interested in along with medicine and it gives me another year to continue research, clinical, and hospital work at my university.
