My concerns are my low GPA and low MCAT scores. I'm planning on retaking the MCAT soon.
My main questions are:
1) Should I apply to DO schools or apply to SMPs/postbacc programs that link to DO schools next year?
2) Is having a moderate number of volunteer/experience hours enough to offset the low GPA?
Graduated 2018 from Ivy League school
cGPA 3.32, sGPA 3.37 (AACOMAS)/3.28 (AMCAS) with upward trend (including 3.93 sGPA with 16 units of DIY postbacc courses)
MCAT: 501 (2017), will be retaking it in a few months
Residency: New York (ties to CA, MA)
Background: Asian, female
Gap Years: education nonprofit (1 year), outpatient scribe (1+ years, ongoing) - details below
Research: ~300 hours wet lab during undergrad (2 years), no papers/thesis
Shadowing: ~50 hours (optometry, cardiac, primary)
Paid Clinical: 1,500+ hours scribing (ongoing job)
Volunteer Clinical: 200+ hours hospital (2013-2014), 40 hours at health clinics (pediatrics, kidney health screenings)
Nonclinical volunteer: 1 service year with AmeriCorps education non-profit (1700+ hours), 4 years undergrad volunteering teaching dance to children (300 hours), mentor/tutoring (50+ hours, ongoing)
Extracurricular/Leaderships: ballroom dancing (varsity letter, 100 hours teaching/mentoring), co-president of dancing group (1 year), team leader of volunteer dance-teaching (2 years), paid babysitter & tutor (~200 hours, including during undergrad),
Other: former elite athlete (prior to undergrad) -- should I even bother mentioning this in the app?
So far, I'm really considering applying to Touro's SMP, which is a MS that links to DO with a 3.45 GPA (not sure how guaranteed it is though).
