Hi all!

I will be applying next year and I wanted to know my chances for the top 20 schools. I am doing currently doing research during my two gap years.

I graduated from one of HYP with a double major in biology and economics. I'm a black male.

My cGPA is a 3.3 and my sGPA is 3.4 (pretty low, I know--didn't do so well my first two years, getting some C's and even a couple Ds; also 2 Ws in the same class).

My MCAT score is 518.

Clinical experience includes work as both an EMT and a CNA. I have also volunteered a couple hundred hours in my local hospital, a free clinic, and at a hospice. Also went on VAW trip to Dominican Republic.

Other volunteering includes habitat for humanity, literacy tutoring, and helping at soup kitchens.

Besides the research I am doing now, I did about 1.5 years of neuroscience work as an undergrad. Also interested in public health, so I did a public health internship in Kenya after my junior year.

~100 hours of shadowing various specialties.

Quite a bit of leadership experiences in various organizations as an undergrad.

I'm proficient in Spanish and conversational in Japanese.

What are my chances for the top 10/20 schools?

Sorry, but to be honest the URM status can only take you so far when it comes to top 10/20 schools. Your MCAT is slightly lower than the average accepted applicant's MCAT, which isn't ideal. It's good that you have an upward trend in your GPA, but I wouldn't count on placing a lot of hope on your prospects. Apply broadly.

As long as you apply to your state schools and the HBCU's, you can add as many reaches as you like.
You'll be fine.

How would you rate my chances at Northwestern? That's my top choice.

Depends on the strength of your upward trend. You might have a shot if your last two years were 3.7+, but I wouldn't count on it.
