Long time lurker and first time poster. Got my MCAT scores back today and I'm very pleased with my score! I was originally only planning on applying DO, but after seeing my score I figured I would at least try my in-state schools. Do I have a realistic shot at getting in? I'm hoping for some in-state lovin!!! Are there other schools I could have a shot at given my stats? I know my GPA is on the low side, but it shows a solid upward trend. My sophomore year was tough as my younger brother was fighting cancer, but I talked about it in my personal statement (it is what convinced me that I wanted to go into medicine). I also realize that it is getting late in the cycle. My AACOMAS application is already submitted and I have a number of secondaries, while a few are pending my MCAT. I haven't even begun my AAMCAS, but will begin after my exam on Thursday.

I originally planned on applying DO because I believe in it's philosophy. I want to also apply MD because in-state tuition would be nice and I would like to specialize. I've read that DO's typically don't have a lot of trouble specializing, but it is somewhat easier to specialize MD.

Freshman GPA: 3.11
Sophomore GPA: 2.77
Junior GPA: 3.67
Senior GPA: 3.71

Overall GPA: 3.38
Science GPA: 3.42

MCAT: 36 (14, 10, 12)

5th year undergrad:
Psych & Bio Major
Chem & Biomed Minor

My extracurriculars aren't fantastic, but I had to work a lot to pay for school.

Extracurriculars:
-3300 hours working as a manager for the women's basketball team
-180 hours working as a basketball coach for my high school (leadership role)
-3500 hours working as a truck driver in the facilities services department at my school (leadership role)
-300 hours doing research in a biopsychology lab
-40 hours volunteer in ER at underserved hospital
-50 hours volunteer in intake at psychiatric hospital
-50 hours shadowing DO primary care
-A good amount of involvement in clubs, but no leadership role

Current DO list:
-CCOM
-RVUCOM
-AZCOM
-ATSU-KCOM
-ATSU-SOMA
-DMU
-LECOM-Erie
-KCUM-COM
-LMU-COM
-Pikeville, Kentucky

Current MD list:
-UW-Madison
-MCW

Please let me know what you think or if you need any more verification!

Anyone? Should I bother with the MD schools or save my money?

With that MCAT, and an upward trend, you should definitely add more MD Schools. Your state schools are your best shot, but you can also aim for some lower-mid tier OOS private schools. You should be good for DO.

Yes, it would be worth applying to MD schools with your MCAT. If you want to remain in the Midwest ( I am assuming you are a Wisconsin resident ) then consider Western Michigan, Oakland Beaumont, Loyola, Rush, Rosalind Franklin, St. Louis, Creighton. In the east you could consider New York Medical College, Quinnipiac, Hofstra, Albany, Drexel, Temple, Jefferson. Just apply this week and submit your secondaries by August.

I am not sanguine about your chances at either MD school. Look at MSAR Online and target those few schools whose median numbers are closest to your own.

DO list is fine, I'd add MUCOM

Thank you for the replies! I will definitely apply this week and add suggested schools.

Tulane would be worth a shot.

@marq182 I think your chances are good for low-to-mid tier MD. Consider these schools:

Hoftra
Quinnipiac
TCMC
Virginia Commonwealth
Western Michigan
St Louis
Chicago Med School
Loyola
Virginia Tech
Tulane
Creighton
Your state schools
3-5 other schools you won't mind attending

Since you are a shoo-in for DO, apply only to 5-6 DO schools....
