Hello I was wondering if someone could give me some tips or recommendations on what to do next year. So the position I am in is I am a senior in college now. I applied the 2014-2015 cycle. So far I have been denied from everywhere I applied except LECOM, NYIT-COM, PCOM, Ohio University Heritage, Rowan, Touro-NY, University of Pikeville (who if anyone knows the number for I would love, I haven't been able to get ahold of them at all through email or phone calls, I always get transferred to some weird answering machine) and West Virginia-SOM (deferred at WV-SOM). The others I haven't heard from. I applied back in July, verified through AACOMAS in late September and all my secondaries were in by mid October. I got accepted to St Georges (SGU) in Grenada and would do the program where I did my first year in Newcastle England. I also got ii at Liberty back in November but it never came through to my email, or in my spam or deleted messages. I interviewed in February when I found out about the interview by calling the school to check my status. I also just took my GRE and did really well. I applied to University of Buffalo, Albany, Upstate, and Binghamton Pharmacology masters programs. My MCAT was a 6 PS 9 Verbal 9 BS. I know the 6 is low but I studied a lot for it and took Kaplan. Also due to family problems and a divorce going on next year I can't just go home and work and study for the new MCAT. Also I've worked as a nurse aid for over 1500 hrs (ton of patient experience) and have a ton of shadowing experience/ volunteer experience (My dad is physician so I've been in and out of the hospital all my life). I know being a doctor is my calling and that I am a borderline applicant. I applied because taking a year off to do a masters isn't something I really hope to do. I've wanted to be a doctor since I can remember and taking a year off just seems like delaying the future. I know SGU is the best Caribbean school but I hear a lot of people say don't go there while I personally know people who had success there. Also I am very scared that a year off in a masters program wouldn't help me. What if I don't do better? What if I take this new MCAT and don't do better? Then what? I'll look back and regret not taking the chance to prove myself at SGU. So my question is what do people think I should do? Also any chance one of those DO schools still pulls through for me? I am praying one will still find a spot for me :/ Thanks

Well you can think of the situation in another way. Say you take the offer and are able to pass all classes at SGU. Your chances of matching are between 50%-70% there. If you don't match, you would have wasted four years of your life instead of one, and be $200+ k down the hole instead of a few thousand applying DO. This is what you could be facing in the distance future.

What was your application list like? You should have gotten a few more interviews with your stats.

if you are averse to retaking the MCAT, apply more broadly and early this next cycle. There will be 1 or 2 new schools opening, so if you apply broadly enough you will be almost certain to get an acceptance.

What should I do? I talked to NYIT and LECOM and PCOM and they said just wait to hear from them, I am calling West Virginia on Monday to express more interest. Ohio Rowan and Touro I also planned to call Monday. Pikeville like I said I have had a lot of trouble getting ahold of.

About my secondaries I thought they were pretty good I had my dad, my sister (who is in her last year of law school and is a very good writer) and two of my professors look at everything before I submitted them and they all liked them and proofread them. I don't think that was the problem.

Why not the Auburn campus of VCOM or ACOM? You really need a little higher score (I think 501, which is equivlent to a 26 apparently, would do it). St. George is the best of the Caribbean, but you are putting yourself on a big limb there. DO school = 99%+ of matching a residency, even in future, and something like 92% of DO students not only graduate, but gradate on time (and many that don't are simply doing a OMM fellowship year where they get a scholarship for being a TA for OMM basically). St. George is 70% match at best (and will prob be lower in future), and its average time to graduate is something like 5.5 years. Caribbean is a much tougher road to hoe. It can be done, but you residency options will be limited, and you will be worried about being failed out constantly. Much easier entrance = much harder exit.

If you apply again without retaking the MCAT, then an earlier application with a boarder school selection will help. Don't even apply to any MD schools, your app. is not strong enough. As for DO schools, you should add LMU-DCOM, ACOM, PCOM-ga, ATSU-soma. The schools you need to take off are AZCOM, CCOM, all Touros, MSU, Rowan, and UNECOM. You can keep the rest.

yep, a few more schools like LMU or ACOM would have probably gotten this person in. just goes to show the difference that good advising can make.

also, there will be 1 or 2 new DO schools opening for next cycle's applicants.

That really sucks to hear... On the note of advising I had none my prehealth advisor left right before my second semester junior year and the lady who took over for him didnt know anything. She told me I wouldn't get in anywhere and I didn't even have a chance was basically the advising I got
