Hey, I'm a junior at UF who would like an honest chancing for MD/DO programs in the United States. Well, here I go:
AMCAS gpa: Cgpa:3.44 sgpa: 3.28 ( I know not that great, I made a mistake of being a math major for the first two years of my career here), am now a Psychology Neuroscience Major. Want to do pediatrics.
AACOMAS gpa: Even worse: Cgpa: 3.44 sgpa, 3.18 (a lot of my math grades were really good, I only got one C)
Projected MCAT grade: 28-30
Volunteering: Over 200 hours at a local elementary school watching over/mentoring over 50 kids on my own (will be well over 200 hours when I apply)
Clinical/Shadowing: Over 250+ hours with 350 patients seen with my pediatrician who helped me through pneumonia, costocondritis and several bouts of bronchitis, performed examinations and other procedures on patients with patients and parents consent in order to learn, learned and was quizzed on physical examination of the pediatric patient from a medical textbook weekly.
Extracurriculars: 3 years of AMSA, 3 years of being a dedicated baritone in a competitive Acapella group here, was in the University Math Society for 2 years, was a student senator for student government in the summer 2012.
LORS: 1. Pediatrician I shadowed/learned under who was the reason I wanted to go into medicine
2. Main supervisor at the elementary school I have volunteered at for the past 3 years
3. Very close friend my high school band director who I was a section leader in his band for 3 years, marched for 4 years total, helped me through problems with a family member who has been in and out of mental hospitals for a long while
4. Calculus 3 professor who claimed I was his top student
5. Chemistry 2 professor who claimed I was top 30 percent
Reasons for wanting to go into medicine: mixture of wanting to help kids who were like me, over anxious about scary illnesses like pneumonia, to help them through their fears physiologically and emotionally, also to gain perspective on the physiological aspects of the mental illness my family member has that has deeply affected my family.
Wanting to matriculate at the following places:
MD: USUHS (Bethesda Army Medicine, top choice)
UT
FSU
FAU
Georgetown
Tulane
DO: Any respectable DO schools, Im not too familiar with DO schools personally, but I'm definitely not shunning that possibility, medicine is medicine 🙂

Numbers are not competitive for FAU, Georgetown, but OK (but well below avg) for Tulane, FSU, FIU and USUHS. By UT do you mean UTx or U TN? Either way, not competetive for any OOS public school.

You're fine for any DO program, including mine.

For MD schools, aim for 30+ on MCAT.

Yeah my GPA probably isn't going anywhere. Am I fine for the DO schools even if my AACOMAS SGPA is 3.18? (most math helped me). And yeah I'm aiming for 30+ but I think I will probably hit around 29 or a 30. If I don't go to USUHS my next choice would be FSU, then DO programs. I don't have anything against DO programs honestly, all get to be doctors in the end, I would be grateful to attend any respectable school of medicine, DO or MD. As far as MCAT goes, I'm taking Kaplan at the moment, and while also doing that, am using the Examcrackers 1001 books for all of the subjects, and creating my own custom flashcards for discrete questions combining those two resources [ the important high yield questions] which seem to help with passage based questions as well as discrete questions. Any other suggestions?

Updated: Another semester of upward trend, I now have a 3.48 cGPA and a 3.31 sGPA. I am aiming to get sGPA to 3.33 (B+) and cGPA to at least a 3.5 by application. Also, taking the MCAT in less than 2 months, and feeling more and more ready everyday!

Good Job! I think 33+ MCAT should make you competitive at most of the schools on your list. As for FAU, it will be a roll of the dice due to you subpar GPAs. I don't get why a relatively new school like FAU is so competitive?

@Saxappeal1 You've been doing very well. Keep the GPA up and kill the MCAT. Check out Sn2ed's MCAT prep thread.

I just took another practice. Bombed it. Any suggestions?

MD: Penn State... My GPA is 3.5....MSAR says I have no chance
Do you think I have a shot at NYMC?
Isn't my MCAT a little low for Albany?
Isn't my GPA a lot low for MCW?

DO: What about DMU-COM? Or PCOM- Philly?

No, I just really want to serve. I know the dean personally.

Yeah, the GPA both C and S are upward trends. Had to change from Math (didn't like it) to Psychology with Neuroscience (love it) and the past 3 semesters have been much better. A few semesters ago my cGPA was like a 3.34, and my sGPA was like a 3.2

NYMC yes. Albany, in striking distance. OK, concur on MCW. My bad. The MI schools might be swapped out instead. DMU is fine, ditto PCOM. I have a high regard for MUCOM too.
