I'm a Ny state resident, and just got a 27P on my MCAT. went to the MCAT cold (i.e no studying) due to an illness. Anyway, I had planned on applying in the next cycle with a better MCAT. However, I thought my breakdown might raise some eyebrows

PS- 7 BS-8 VR-12.

Should I even bother applying? or should I improve the MCAT to >30

At this point, I don't want to do a DO school and wil keep trying for MD programs.

Your stats are quite low for an MD acceptance. That sub-30 MCAT is killer. Any particular reason you're not considering DO? It's a very attainable option given your stats.

Who the heck am I here, but if it were me, I'd focus on moving that MCAT up--and if allopathic is your intended path, that would seem to be what to do--that and making your whole app look great.

I have nothing against DO schools, but I just have a future goal of practicing internationally and in under-serviced countries. An MD is critical for these purposes

No offense, but I have an identical GPA with a balanced 35 MCAT and I'm scared ****less I won't get into one of the 21 MD programs I've applied to. And I was a very successful varsity athlete at a D1 school. So unless you're URM I would definitely say improve the MCAT or include some DO programs to be safe. I'm curious as to why a D.O. would have problems practicing internationally. Can someone enlighten me?

They dont its kinda a misconception. My undergrad gives us a whole lecture on how DOs have full practicing rights with programs like doc w/o borders, global brigades, etc. And ive done quite a bit of research on this one because im also interested in abroad/underserved work =)

I also agree with the other posters, OP. I feel like you should retake your mcat, it seems like ud be capable of a higher score pretty easily if that 12 in VR means anything. Maybe take a prep class this time?
