Criminal Background:

When I was 18, I was out with friends after dialysis. I had Goodpastures Syndrome that caused ESRD. They got in a fight and cops were called. Cops tried questioning me and I told them, I’m not answering anything to incriminate my friends. They told me that would be obstruction and I told them to **** off and more expictives (in retrospect, this was stupid, but I was also on a pain meds and immunosuppressants). Then they placed me under investigative detention until I cooperated. When they cop out a cuff on my left arm, I tensed up and then he tackled me saying I assaulted him. Obviously at this point all of my friends are heckling and yelling at the cop (I’m a soaking wet 100 pounds). After being put in the car and told of my charges I continued with the profanity with everyone including the magistrate and other cops. I come from nothing so I had to hire a public defender. Before a trial could occur, the DA offered me Class 1 Misdemeanor Obstruction without Force, and a Nolle Prosquei for the Class 6 Felony Assault on Police. My defender convinced me that this is my only option because it’s his word against mine. Not wanting to risk having a felony on my record, I accept the plea deal as my lawyer stated that this is not considered guilty and I could have it expunged. Here I am 6 years later, wanting to know if medical school is still an option for me. I still have the incident report that he wrote in which it explicitly states that the assault occured when I tensed my arm.

Dude you're being really dumb for someone that got a 526. If it's expunged you don't even have to report it on your application. Even if you did have to report it, it wouldn't be much of an issue given the circumstances.

Some applications ask for all arrests. Although it was expunged, the record can still be seen on state licensing background checks. I don’t want to omit it now and then have it haunting me later with 200+k in loans.

Edit: And academic intellect is not equivalent to the understanding of arrests/charges (not conviction) impact on med school admissions

The primary application does not ask for arrests. Some (very few) secondaries do so just don't apply to those schools. You're not lying or omitting anything when AMCAS specifically says to not include records that have been expunged or sealed.

Yes you will have to report this for licensure in most states, but that is even more of a non issue. No medical board is gonna deny you licensure for this lmao

Thanks you for the info. I just want to make sure since the charge is a “violent” felony. The cop even wrote a letter supporting my expungement of the charge when I went to expunge it. He knows that I was overcharged and underrepresented. I’m definitely taking full responsibility of it though.

You’re gonna be fine. Don’t report in on AMCAS because it literally tells you not to. For licensure purposes they will look at your track record since then and the circumstances surround it. It won’t be a problem.

Best to ask a lawyer.
I can see even after six years some Adcom members might be concerned.

I agree that if the prompts don't ask, then don't tell.
