Hello everyone,

I currently have one year left as an undergrad at penn state main campus, whereafter I plan to take a gap year as I apply in the spring of my senior year with looking at entering medical school during fall 2019. I'm a vertebrate physiology biology major with a minor in Health Policy and administration.

I scored 501 on the September 9th 2017 MCAT.
Chem /Phys: 126
CARS: 125
Bio and Biochem: 125
Psych and Soc: 125

I plan on applying to DO schools only due to my MCAT score. Also, I like the approach of the DO curriculum more over MD. I also am very interested in primary care and working in a rural area.

I have had an upward trend in my gpa junior year while taking challenging classes. Went from a 3.4 to a 3.53 from sophomore to junior year.

As far as extracurriculars, I am currently an EMT (Paid at home during the summer and volunteer up at school during the fall and spring). I have accumulated a lot of clinical experience and patient contacts this way. However, i only started as an EMT in January of 2017. I plan to continue working the next year and throughout my gap year as an EMT to continue to get experience.

I previously did half of a semester of research for an agricultural project at penn state, but I didn't like it at all, so i didn't continue with it. I much rather prefer direct patient care and clinical experience.

I am part of a christian club at my school.

I volunteer 1-2 times a week in the local hospital's ER up at school during the fall and spring.

I am currently shadowing a DO right now regularly, about once a week for the summer. He is a family practice physician. I have also shadowed a general surgeon once but it didn't really interest me. I actually am starting to grow an interest for primary care as I shadow the DO more and more.

I work at the local food bank once a week.

I am a PA resident. Thus, I am interested in PCOM and LECOM. I have also been looking at WVUSOM. What other schools could you all recommend in addition to these schools based on my level of competitiveness? Also, any suggestions and constructive criticism is always welcome!

Thank you kindly!

You are fine for all DO schools except AZCOM.
I can't recommend Touro-NY or LUCOM, for reasons posted previously. See my profile as to why.

You've got a punchers chance at each DO school but you'll need to apply broadly to be safe, as your stats are average or below average for the likes of PCOM, CCOM, NOVA, etc.

I would apply to;
-pcom
-lecom
-western Oregon
-acom
-wvucom
-unecom
-nova
-Rvu Colorado
-kcumb

I'd add a few more too but those are off the top of my head. Good luck OP! We are....

In addition to PCOM and LECOM you could receive interviews at these schools with your stats:
MU-COM
WVSOM
UP-KYCOM
LMU-DCOM
ACOM
ARCOM
BCOM
UIWSOM
VCOM (all 3 schools)
NYIT-Arkansas
RVU-Utah
WCU-COM
You should apply broadly to at least 10 schools.
