I have a 3.83 overall GPA, 3.65 BCPM, and 491 (new) MCAT. What are my chances of getting into medical school? Not the elite schools but state schools. Specifically University of Mississippi.

I am female, I have 100+ hours of physician shadowing experience, I have also done other volunteering opportunities such as volunteering at a preschool. I am a nutrition major (unique) and I feel that I have a strong personal statement.

You need to retake the MCAT for MD schools, and probably for DO as well.

With a 491 MCAT, your best shot would be a Caribbean school. If you want to go DO or MD, you absolutely need to retake the MCAT.

I definitely would recommend a retake first. Block off 4-8hrs per day for 3-4 months and study diligently. If you don't significantly raise your score, then you could apply Caribbean. But, you would have a much lower chance of obtaining a US residency in the Caribbeans. Apply to the BIG 4 if you do.

Okay thank you. I am also looking at Caribbean schools. Which ones are the best with accreditation and having a low MCAT?

The U of MS has a 10th% MCAT of 24.
Your score is the equivalent of about a 19.
Do not go to the Caribbean until you have maximized your chances in the US.

So i should still keep my application in? If i don't get in then there was $700+ wasted on applying to schools (16).

I wish i could retake but being in school full time does not give me the amount of time that i need/would like to prepare for the exam.

St George's University, Ross University, American University of the Caribbean and Saba University, AKA "the Big 4". I wouldn't apply to any other Caribbean schools, Usually, if you have a check book, you can get into one of those 4.

You will need to carve out the time to study for the test before your re-take.
The chances of becoming licensed from a Caribbean "school" is around 50% now and it likely to be much lower by the time they (finally) let you sit for Step 1, if they ever do.

I am sorry about the wasted $.
But if you think that is bad, don't go to the Carib just to owe hundreds of thousands with no license to pay it off.

Study during a gap year, or in the summer between semesters. I studied at least 4 hours a day as a full time student. It sucked, but that is part of the deal with the MCAT. You won't do well if you don't put in the time to study. I woke up at 8-9am, and I was busy with school, EC's, and studying until I went to bed. Basically the only other things I did besides that was eat and exercise.

Your MCAT is lethal for both MD and DO.

Retake, but fix whatever deficits you had to do so poorly first.

Sadly, the app money was wasted. Think of it as tuition in the college of life. Don't even think of going to Carib diploma mills unless you like the idea of being unemployed and deeply in debt.
