Hello everyone!

I'll be applying this cycle to mostly DO and probably some MD, but I have a low MCAT.

First and only MCAT was 502 (123,124,128,127). I was really discouraged with this score; I took it in January after studying part time while taking classes and working. I think I can do much better, but I don't really have the time to retake it before this cycle without delaying my application. I will likely retake around January if I don't get in this cycle.

I'm graduating this semester and haven't gotten all grades back, but AMCAS cGPA ~3.67 and sGPA ~3.66. AACOMAS sGPA is closer to 3.7. I have a pretty decent upward trend: Between my freshman year and high school college classes my GPA was ~3.1. Sophomore year 4.0, junior year 3.63, senior year ~4.0.

I'm a ORM NY resident and a first gen student.

Clinical experience: Around 2k hours as an EMT. I spent a decent chunk of this time training new EMTs and students.

No research experience.

Shadowing: Around 100 hours, mostly in FM, but I also shadowed ortho (surgery and clinic) and diagnostic radiology.

Non-clinical volunteering: About 60 hours in local food banks. Also around 200 hours on 7 Cups (done for college credits).

No other major ECs/awards. I am graduating with honors and I was on the deans list for about 4 semesters.

I'm going to have 2 LORs from science professors, 1 from a non science professor, 1 from the FM MD I shadowed, and I'm getting one from my supervisor at work.

Do I have a decent shot at getting into a DO/MD school? I know MD is a bit of a reach. Also looking for recommendations on which schools to apply to. Right now I'm mostly interested in EM and IM so I don't mind going to a DO school. Also feel free to suggest some improvements I can make for next cycle if needed. Right now, I think the main thing holding me back is the MCAT.

Welcome to the forums.

Is your only employment your work as an EMT? I just wanted clarification if you had other jobs post-high school.

What were your responsibilities for 7Cups? Isn't it online-only?

Thanks for your reply!

Through high school and for the first 1.5 years of college (before I started as an EMT) I worked at a farmers market. For about 4 years I worked under my mother helping her run her stand and then for the last 2 or so years I ran a stand by myself. It was definitely a good experience, but it was under the table so I'm not sure it's worth mentioning. When I was on my own, I was responsible for picking up equipment and product, driving there, setting up, doing sales through the market, breaking down, driving back, and inventory for sales and product left over.

Yes, 7 Cups was online only. It's a platform that provides free, anonymous emotional support/mental health help. It's basically a chat service where you go on as a listener and members can chat with you. It's not like a crisis text line or something of that sort. You get some pretty basic training and you go on there as a listener. You're not really supposed to try to help people, you're just supposed to listen to them and try to guide them through whatever is happening.

What have others told you about including this experience or not? Why do you feel it's not important to mention?

You are competitive for the majority of DO schools with your stats and I suggest these:
Touro-NY
NYITCOM (both schools)
UNECOM
PCOM (all schools)
LECOM (all schools)
WVSOM
UP-KYCOM
MU-COM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
TUNCOM
UIWSOM
ACOM
WCU-COM
CUSOM

Honestly I haven't really gotten any advice from others about that. I thought it was a good experience, but I'm not sure that it's super relevant. Would that be worth putting on my app?

Thank you so much!

Do you think I should apply to any MD schools?
