Hey everyone,

Finished off my senior year and ended with a final cGPA of 3.68 and a sGPA of 3.48. I got a 4.00 and a 3.86 in my last two semesters. Im taking the mcat soon. Is MD still an option for me or am I being delusional? Shooting for the highest MCAT I can but is there a minimum I would need to be considered somewhat competitive? I have strong EC's and good recs. Thanks!

In addition- is there anything I should do to bump that science GPA without taking a another year off (since most SMPs and Masters programs are no longer accepting applicants) like taking science classes at my local college etc?

There is absolutely no way to predict without a MCAT score. Your GPAs are below average(especially your sGPA) and we don’t know about your ECs. So come back when you have your score and can share your ECs and people will be happy to help you out. In the meantime research DO programs. Good luck on the test.

Very hard to say without an MCAT. I think you will be fine as long as you're above 512. My GPA was comparable, ended up scoring highly on the MCAT (519). I was left on read by all the top schools but I did snag a few acceptances and scholarships in the middle-tier range of schools!

@candbgirl
EC's:

Clinical: ~450 clinical volunteering (mostly with free clinic serving underserved/impoverished populations)
Non-clinical: ~80 hours--hospital receptionist volunteering, mentoring middle schoolers, small service projects here and there
Shadowing: ~85 hours shadowing 3 different specialities (radiology, ortho, ENT)
Research: 1 year of sociology research
Other: 3 years as part of a non-athletic competitive team, competed locally, regionally, nationally. Multiple awards, both individual and team
Tutoring: chem tutor (private) for a year
Teaching/tutoring: taught/tutored chemistry to athletes (paid via athletic department)
Rec letters from coaches, healthcare providers from clinic, sociology professors (my major), and 2 science professors

ORM

Any tips?

Should I take any extra classes or whatnot during my gap year to boost that sGPA or will it not matter? Currently prepping for MCAT and hoping for the best I can do! @Goro @gyngyn

You should apply as if your GPAs are 4.0/3.9. Now, some schools will write you off, because it's a seller's market, but there are MD schools that reward rising GPA trends.

You're fine for any DO school, including mine.

Come back with an MCAT score and then we can properly advise on a school list.

Can I apply to DO schools? I haven't shadowed any DO's (only MD's) and do not have a DO LOR..

Do you mind taking a look at my school list. Sorry to hijack, it's just that I could use some input

Honestly I wasn’t very knowledgeable in the process. I just cast a super wide net. Purchased the med school school stat thing and look at the places where I was fringe comparable stat wise. Then cross referenced oos admissions via some excel sheet I found somewhere.

I had identical GPAs, scored a 518 on the MCAT, and got 4 IIs and 1 acceptance to a ~T20 school. The GPAs won't hold you back if you have strong ECs and get ~510+ on your MCAT.
What kind of ECs did you have? Military veteran? Peace Corps? Published author?

Nah none of that stuff you keep talking about around SDN lol. I just made a very compelling argument for wanting to go to the school that I was accepted to and that showed in my secondaries and interview. Tbh my ECs are probably weaker than most.
